150 Redux

240 story

240 story

I got a great deal on a 240 from a local reefer getting out of the madness. Its a Glasscages 96 X 24 X 24 with starfire glass on 3 sides. It came with a 125 gal sump, 500lbs of live rock and a load of softies, a split chiller unit, 3 X 400watt MH/ 4 96watt PC hood, a Korallin BioDenitrator S-3002 w/ Eheim 1048 Pump, a amp master return pump and a monster closed loop with a Reefflow Hammerhead.

I just could not pass up the opportunity, although it has taken a full month to get it going and I still have the lighting to get to.

The 120 with 500lbs of rock and lots of softies. there are still 2 brutes full of Rock!

125 gal sump. I shored up the stand so the sump was off the floor, built a plenum with 6 inch DSB and filled it with 100 + lbs of live rock.

Hammerhead closed loop over the top with 5 returns on each end.

Full of water and flowing around 30 X between the Ampmaster and the hammerhead.

My friend Brucem can by the following weekend and we built a stand for the 120 and plumbed it all up to the 240.

After that we built a few Kalk reactors. Here is his.

man oh man you have some work ahead of you Greg lol, changing lighting, adding all those reactors and refuge.and i thought i had it bad on my build.

Chris,

It has been a lot of work, working on setting up a 150, 120 and a 240 all at once. Not to much free time in between.

I still have 4 18 inch reflectors to build and 2 16 inch reflectors and racks to hold VHOs and the 120 and 240 will be finished. Oh yea plumb in the chiller and get it charged, and build a few more reactors.

I have accumulated a lot of odds and ends along the way and have not had to buy much extra. I need to have a garage sale to get rid of a lot of reef junk.

Holy crap you've been busy! I didn't know if you were still alive or not;) . I'll be giving you a call soon, I need your help with some very minor compared to what you've been up to projects. Hope all is well.

man that is a lot of rock. Let me know if you need someone to come help and take it off your hands. hahhhaahha . Whew you been working look in good so far.

Yea, its been a lot of work thanks! I need to sell off a few hundred Lbs of rock and a load of softies to recoup some cash out of the deal.

Andrew, you know where I live come on by.

I finished the mockup of the manifold that will supply water to the Fluidized bed filter, the carbon reactor, the protien skimmer, the Sulfur Denitrifier, the Ca reactor and house the Ph and ORP probes.

Well the pace hasn't slowed down yet but I have made some progress.

The AC3 came in and I have been getting it dialed in, I have to say that I love it already. I have installed the AC3along with the DC8, Lunar Sim, Breakout box, and Aquasurf where the Tombstone timers were.
fuge2.jpg

I have completed the plumbing for the manifold with the exception of draining the sump and drilling the hole for the bulkhead for the T4 that will supply the water to the PH/ORP Probes, Reactors, Fuge and Skimmer supply. I hope to get the final plumbing done tomorrow.

I have built and installed the new light rack that houses 2 250watt SE Aquaconnect 14k MH and 4 VHOs, 3 120mm fans and 4 lunar Sim LEDs, and I also built and installed the new light rack for the prop tank that houses 4 VHOs and 2 120mm fans.

Looks like you have been busy. You got any pics of the light racks? Aer they the same as your t-5 rack?

Stephen,

Ill get some pics up when I get a chance to slow down. The lights look just like the other except with Luninarc reflectors and VHOs.
I will say that the VHO Actinics are far superior to the T5....I love the new look.

When you get home we gotta get slamming on your new setup!!

Sounds good Greg, I just need a little help in the organization of what to do when. I don't want to just do something to be doing it and then have to change other stuff down the road because I didn't have a good plan!

Stephen,

That is what I do best, I have almost finished this build and with the exception of the lighting and trying to feed the skimmer with the drain from the prop tank everything has gone just as planned.

The fuge the Carbon Reactor and Fluidized Bed Filter are flowing, the T4 is pulling its weight, providing about 450gph (at a 1 foot head) to the skimmer and about 250 gph through the Fluidized Bed Filter and 150 gph through the Carbon Reactor (at about 7 foot head) the wears in the fuge are maxed out with the flow and Ill have to open them up if I try to get more flow through the fuge.

I have some pics of the carnage that I made this afternoon coming for you.

Ok, Yesterday I started with draining 30 gals from the tank to empty the sump. Pulled the skimmer, skimmer platform and everything else out of the sump. Drilled the hole for the 1 inch bulkhead in the sump and the hole for the 1.5 bulkhead in the fuge. I used the trusty old Shopvac and a squeegee to clean out all the detritus and acrylic shavings from the sump. I installed the bulkheads and hooked up the plumbing for the T4.

Reinstalled the skimmer only to realize that I hadn’t leak tested my work.
DSC04037.jpg

So I installed the PH and ORP probed and the feeds to my sulfur denitrator, added 30 gals of fresh saltwater to the sump and fired up the T4 ….no leaks!

I had originally planed to run the effluent from the carbon reactor directly to the display but I was not getting as much flow through the fuge as I wanted. So I re-plumbed the carbon reactor to go over the top of the fuge like I had done with the fluidized bed filter.
fugereactors.jpg

Next I filled the fluidized bed filter with about 9 inches of aragonite and the carbon reactor with a bout 6 inches of carbon and Phosban. I added another 10 gals of fresh salt water and fired up the pumps again.
reactors.jpg

It took a little tweaking but the flow is perfect, Im getting about 450 gph to the Skimmer which is better than the 802 I was feeding it with before. The fluidized bed filter is getting about 250 gph which expands the 9 inches of sand to about 15 inches with a strong roll, The carbon reactor is getting about 150 gph which expands the 6 inches of media to about 9 inches with a slight roll.

Nice work!

Thanks adddo, I try to make it functional and neat but sometimes I go over board and get a little anal.

jumping on board, sorry to hear about the crash of your old system it really looked like you had several years invested in that tank.

Yes the old 65 was up for at least 3 years before the crash. it was a nice tank only way to small. Now that the 150 is almost finished it seems too small also.

Correy, Im trying to get some pics up for you now.

Here are a few bad pics for now, the light is just to bright and I'm tired of messing with it.

The prop tank has4 VHOs; 2 URI Super Actinics, 1 URI Aqua Sun, and 1 URI Actinic White.

The display tank, has 2 250watt SE Aquaconnect 14ks, 4 VHOs 2 URI Super Actinics, 1 URI Aqua Sun, and 1 URI Actinic White.

Here is a full tank shot showing the fuge running, it is lit by a 51k twist bulb.
