I am currently setting up my 170 gallon mixed reef tank the dimensions are 60x24x30 i am wanting led lights for less heat and less enrrgy bill. I need recommendations on lighting systems that i can use with out me having to re-finance my house :) most units i see are 120 w and a 50/50 mix of white and blue but typicwlly are 15x8x3 im not sure if three of these units evenly spaced would be enough or not my lights will be between 6-9" off of the water any thoughts or advice would be great thank you

Im on board with this thread. Looking at LEDS for my mixed Reef 150g.

I have looked for info on Ecotech, EcoRay and some other off brands. Not sure for wide spread or depth to be honest.
Looks like 120 degree would be good for the spread but not sure the depth versus other specifics.

true i like the simplicity of the a150 and i know with 4 of them i will have complete coverage of my tank and the top 12" for light robbing corals and mushrooms and leathers in the bottom half. I think 2 evos 200 will also give me complete coverage and still have the deep penetration to put most corals any where in my tank. This is where my dilema comes in because they both seem like they would fit my needs just wanting some more experienced people to chime in or anyone with experience with these light. This is my first larger reef tank moved up from a 75 gal with 4x110 vhos and i want to do it right the first time.

after looking at the ecotech's they would have to be to far off the tank for my liking. Those units are only 12x7ish. i dont like the idea of the fans on the bottom either but if they were off the water a lot then the salt would not get in them anyways. The Ecotechs would be out for me.
Aqua Illuminations SOL Super Blue is another to look at
so lets do some research and see what we can come up with. another brand is
Orphek Reef Aquarium LED Lighting 24x6 though

yes ive looked at just about every brand available and i am not to handy with electronics for a diy led ive been looking for about 3 weeks now vigerously and this is why i have come up with the kessil a150s and the evolution dimable 200 most fictures i find are roughly 12-15" long which would mean i would need 4 of them which is why i like the evo 200 cuz they are 24" long and two of them would give me full coverage and dimable 400w of led and also the simplicity of the kessil and 4 of those would give me complete coverage just not sure about penetration have you looked at either of these models for your tank? what are your dimensions

this is a picture of my lfs display tank 150 gal with 2 radions on it very nice lights i purchased 1 for my 40 gal breeder and i love it you need to see them in person if you can

ya i have looked at those two as well. the EVO is ok but the 90 degree angle may appear much like a spot light affect. I am looking for ones that can be mounted under the canopy which is 8 inches now but will be 12 inches soon. With that being said the MH's are only 4 inches off the water right now and 8 inches total when i rebuild the canopy next month. I would need at least 3-4 units. depending on how i mount them. The EVO looks like it may work for me but i need to find out if 8 inches above the tank water is enough to not cause spot light affects. i like the idea of dimming the units. i do wonder if there is a way to control them for moonlights? i do have 2 Panoramic units for moonlights so its not a huge deal breaker for me.

o ya- i like the idea of modular on the Aqua Illuminations units- this can allow you to change out lamps when the technology changes but i do not know how far that will take you. This technology is advancing quickly so i would hate to get stuck with something that is ok when in 6 months it could be greatness.

Don't count out DIY. I have a 60x18x24 120 with all dimmable Cree LEDS. Doesn't get much more fully customizable. I like the fact I can add or change lights anytime. When you order you can choose your own ratio of blue and white depending on your preference. Also, you have access to the most recent technology.

There is an EVO that is 24 inches long so i could use 2 of them on my 150 which is 72x18x26 - i think i could use two of them. long ways of course.

the radions have pc interface you can set them up however you like you can turn just blues on,reds, green,or whites all can be timed to your liking threw the pc no timers needed

im not sure that the PC interface is a coo concept because of the price tag n those units. We do not knwo enough about the Radion units to make a good assumption over a period of time yet. JMThoughts
