175g seahorse tank need tank mates

I am building/aquaring a coustom tank for my other fish so the wife says the 175g bowfront is now a seahorse tank...

the tank will have plenty of live rock...mostly branch for hitching posts....what other fish would you recomend to go with the seahorses...looking at about 20 seahorses in this tank.....

i have had seahorses before in a 29g and a perc clown a royal gamma and a mandrin and the seahorses thrived

any recomendations will be apriciated(sp?)

I think some good tank mates would be pipe fish, gobies, maybe some decorative shrimp

I wouldn't suggest pipefish due to disease transmission issues among syngnathids (search "mixing species" on any of the seahorse-related forums). 20 seahorses is quite the bioload.

I'd be looking for fish that would be helpful.

Something to stir the sand, things that like left overs, friendly algae eaters, things that like detritus.

What kinda filtration are you going to be running on the 175g? Any plans on plant life or corals.

sump...skimmer..macro alge.

corals probably not....not much of coral person..if they come on the live rock thats fine but iam not going to buy a coral to have corals... i prefer movment not stationary

Seriously, though, I'm a new horse owner, but if you decided not to have 20, could you possibly scale down and get giants? Just curious what THAT could be like....! Someday when I don't live in a one-bedroom in NYC.... <sigh>

20 was just a figure of speach to show that the tank is going to be a SEAHORSE tank...i know iam going to have a mandrin..had one in my last seahorse tank until i forgot to shut the lid one day and he went carpet surfing while i was at work

I have a yellow headed sleeper goby (also called blue cheeked goby) to sift the sand in my 50 gal sh tank. He is doing a great job and hasn't bothered the seahorses at all - very passive at feeding time.

Catalina gobies need water in the low to mid 60's. The water would be too warm for them in a seahorse tank.

Nope. Low 70's are the highs for the surface water where it lives. Keeping one at the low 70's year-round would significantly shorten its lifespan.

Yes, but temperate fish don't sell nearly as well as tropical fish, since far more people keep tropical reefs than cool water tanks... Its sad, but you really do have to get your research from places that aren't trying to sell you something. Its not that retailers try to screw you, but some of them are just getting their info from other retailers, or from the people that sold them the fish, and from their experience while the fish are briefly kept in their holding tanks before sale.

Catalina gobies are a good tankmate for temperate seahorses like whitei or pots. So the sites might be accurate, but still expect you to do the research to ensure your tank is a suitable home.

The goby itself is not a threat to the seahorse, your tank is a threat to the goby. Dig?

Sea moths are really cool like creatures if you can find them. I know there's a thread somewhere here on RC of a guy who's got 3 tangs with his horses and the tangs get along great with the horses.

Well iam starting the tank...sorry its been so long but things (life) got in the way... will be moving into my new house in about 45 days..where the tank will be set up..my 1st horse is on its way and the qt tank is ready for him.. next question is a 10g with small filter,2 hitching posts and sand and small low level light good for a 1-3 inch yellow kuda..if not i need to know soon as i can make changes but the horse is on its way

Tagging along here. I just started QT on the captive bred yel Kuda that's about 2.25" in a Aquapod 24 and it'll be going into a 75g. I'll be adding a second one this week.
