180 gal stand

all,

i dont have pictures yet but do you think a DIY stand made with 4x4 legs and headers will support about 2300lbs of the 180 gal tank?

i have six legs (one each corner and two in the center of the front and back runs). the sides are 36in long (front to back) and do not have a center leg. the front and back (48 in long) have a 4x4 in the center and coners.

i then run 4x4 headers across the tops of the 4x4 legs. the top of the stand is covered in 3/4 in plywood.

i used 5 in screws to make all connections.

thoughts?

First off, don't use 4x4s. They are more prone to shrink and warp that 2x4s.

Have you seen rocketengineer's design? Do a search here to find it.

i can tell you need to read up on some basic principles of stand design. the rocketengineer thread would be very helpful for you. 4x4's in general are a bad idea but you wanting to use them as horizontal supports tells me that some reading would do you well.

two 2x4's are cheaper and stronger when attached as an L shape for the corners, use a 2x8 for the header or a 2x6 if you have one or two center braces. a 2x6 alone will be stronger and cheaper than a 4x4.

there really is no reason to use a 4x4 unless it is for asthetics.
