180 stand

Cancer Sucks
I got the stand for my new 180 welded today. I'll build the wood skins next weekend. Thanks to Scott and Erin for letting me loosley copy thier stand design!

looks cool! will it be powder coated?

no cross bars on the bottom? Your sump will sit directly on the floor then? I installed a wood "tub" in the bottom of mine to catch spills, drips, leaks, etc.

I can't wait to see what you do with the skins, I am still brainstorming mine. I am leaning heavily towards magnets. Keep the pics rolling as you go!

Thanks!

I was going to powdercoat it, but I think I'll just spray it myself.

It will sit on a sheet of plywood, so the sump won't have to sit on the floor. :) That's why I left the cross brace out of the bottom.

Tiff talk to Sidewinder he has a pretty cool little system for his skins .....

Also if you drill the stand you could use those roller clips to hold each side on and it will pop off and on with ease.

I am doing that for my 180's doors since they are 29w x 31t

Very cool! I would definately recommend powdercoating but paint will work as well. I've also seen people use roll on truck bedliner paint- kind of rubbery feel but would probably protect it a little better than regular paint. I don't think you need the cross braces on the bottom anyway- not like it provides much support. I do like the idea of having some sort of "tray" that goes around the whole bottom of the stand- I think one of Fligers last tanks had that- great idea for catching spills and such. Be sure to keep the pics coming :)

Thanks. I'll use sealing primer before painting it white. I think it'll be ok. I'm going to use silicone caulk between the plywood and the stand on the bottom. At 1" high, it'll hold about 7 gallons of water. :)

Looks awesome, can't wait to see the tank!

I have three two steel stands, one I had primed/sealed/painted by a pro, and it didn't really hold up all that well. The other one (84x36x36) I had powdercoated for about $100 and after those two experiences I'd definitely get it powdercoated. Its a small amount of money, and if there's something you want to get perfect its the stand!

Thanks for the experiences David. I was going back and forth on powdercoating. I had convinced myself paint would be fine. However, now I've been re-convinced it's not worth saving the small amount of money. I'll take it Thursday for powdercoating.

Shop around man, the prices will really vary. I had a quote of $300, then AZ Powder Coat did it for under $100. I paid a small rush fee and I think it ended up being $125. The cool part is you can do any color, I wish I woulda done like bright red, it woulda looked cool when you open up the wood. I love that pic in your avatar.

I've had motorcycle parts done at North American Powder Coating in Tucson and it was super cheap. Two wheels, fork sliders, mirrors, primary cover, and some smaller parts all came up to like $80. I just called the guy and told him I'd be by Thursday morning, and he gave me his cell number in case he isn't to the shop yet.

Thanks, my avatar is the Chips I got from Kirsten. :)

I can't believe no one has commented on the fire engine red stand!
I'm going to paint things like the skimmer lid and sump trim red too.

Ain't no proof without pics :D. I gotta see the stand- sounds cool. You'll be very happy you went with powdercoating- much cleaner and it will last a lot longer. Kind of stinks about the tank- where did you get the tank from?

Lol, yeah I'll get pics when I can.

I ordered the tank through a LFS here in town. They use LeeMar as thier tank builder. I think they're in California.

The red stand is going to look sweet! Our powder coater was trying to convince us to do something crazy, but we kept it boring.

Having a red stand under a wood skin is kind of like wearing sexy underwear. Nobody knows but you unless you choose to show it to them. :D

I am so sorry about the tank. The waiting is the hardest part!!! I can't wait to see pics.

Thanks. My plan was to build the wood skins and fuge stand today, but first I have to change the fuel pump on my truck. :(

aztbs, I didn't even notice the middle comment earlier. That's funny!

After it was all said and done today, I got the fuel pump changed, got the wood and trim, and got the top plywood cut and painted. I'm going to pick up the stand from the powdercoater on Thursday.
