I am starting a 180G reef project. Oceanic tank acquired. Oceanic Model 3 sump is on the way.

Looking for recommendations - What size heater(s) should I put in the sump? I have read that two is better than one, in case of a failure of one. What is the experience here?

Thanks for advice.

I generally use two undersized heaters. When heaters fail they tend to fail on..so if your heaters are undersized and one fails on it won't cook the tank.

2 - 250w heaters should work fine.

I haven't used heaters on my tank in over 5 years. with my lights and house it always stayed to warm, and needed a chiller. If your tank isn't setup yet, wait to buy them to see if you need them.

I run the house temp pretty cool at nights - around 68 degrees F, and my 95G has needed a heater from time to time.

Thanks.

I am the same way. I am not so sure my heater has ever kicked on. I have mine in the wall and just a small 4x12 room behind it. I fight heat all the time, even with a chiller.
