...My tank is 72 X 32 X 24 and I got one made from cast iron. I have seen some 200 gallon aquariums that had supports made from 2 X 4's but I would go steel if you can
2x4 will be fine when used properly. 2x6 would be better for the cross supports but 2x4s can be used for the legs. I built my 210g tank stand with 2x4`s doubled in the corners and 2x6 across the top for the tank to sit on and its going nowhere. The outside skin or plywood you use will also add more stability and strength to the whole thing...
Have you seen what some of the makers stands are made with ? We tend to go a little overkill building ours at home.
Of course steel would be the best but we all don't have access to them or the ability to build them..I would have loved to have had a steel one made for mine
Not the best pic but will give you an idea of what it looked like before I skinned the outside with 3/4" oak ply.

I know, some of the stand makers build tank stands that look pretty flimsy, but they must work. Actually, I work for a company that has a fabrication shop. I could get one of the guys to build me a stand out of metal. Aluminum would be light weight. If I go with steel, how would I attach the oak skin to the metal?
