185x to much flow?

Ive got a 30gal cube, with two tunze 6045's (1158gph) and 6055 (set from low 396gph to alternate to full 1453gph) and probably about 750gph on the return...so its roughly 185x tank volume...I am only going to have encrusting monti's and wondering if this is to much flow? Nothing is in there right now, but no sand is flying around and never did, its in the same place before I added the pumps...so it does not seem crazy...but I am worried its to much...looking for thoughts...

thanks for any help.

;) you scared your sand! It's afraid to move. It's a "bit" much... "rules of thumb" say 10x DT volume, for SPS you can go more but 185x sounds a little excesive.

Spacey ;)

I'm on for overdoing it a bit. I have two Ecotech Marine MP40w's on a 40 gallon breeder. I would says if your going SPS and you dont see anything wrong the. Leave it alone. I would be.more worried about the sand but if its not moving then more power to you. I have one corner where my sand slowly gets moved around but I placed a rock there abd problem solved.

If your sands not moving I don't see a problem. I think most peoples tanks are fairly deficient in flow. Put a frag in and see how it behaves.

if the sand isnt flying around and you dont mind all the powerheads in the tank go for it. i personally would take out one of the 6045 and change the return pump to something a little smaller.

I am in the bit excessive club, I think as soon as you put a coral in there, you will find your true answer. Let us know!

Funny I was about to say the complete opposite...I think we have become flow freaks...SPS has been kept for many many years and it seems every year we keep increasing the amount of flow needed to keep them alive and happy (even though they have been thriving for years in our glass boxes). I believe we have become slaves to what the big companies put out then the latest and greatest becomes the benchmark for what everyone else is missing.

I don't think thats true. SPS have been surviving for years in our tank, but as the technology improves, we have seen them go to thriving. Also, when you compare GPH of propeller pumps to the older style pumps using impellers and nozzles, they aren't even in the same game. 4000gph coming out of something styled like a maxijet would blow the skin off an acro at close range, but you can grown sps and even some lps inches away from an MP40 at full blast and it does wonderfully.

Also, once a tank grows in and there are all sorts of branches and formations blocking and stopping flow, the flow that was adequate is now insufficient and the flow that was pretty good is now only adequate.
