1st Build

Hello Frag members, I'm brand new to the hobby and getting ready to start my 1st build. I have a tank and stand on order, a build plan, a few books, and several months of watching videos and reading Reef Central. I'm hoping you guys will provide some good advice so I can shorten my learning curve.

Most definitely, that's what these forums are for :) you will however have to narrow down your questions though. ( can't really tell if you were asking for advice in this post)

Welcome to AZ FRAG! Let us know what you need help with.

What size aquarium are you ordering?

Welcome!
What size is your tank that's being built? Is it going to be a reef?
What's your build plans?

Thanks guys. I wanted to go with a std 90g but I was limited on space so I went with a 93g cube. It's 30x30x24. 1st question. What should I be doing while I'm waiting for it to come in? I read a lot on dry rock and it sounds like some people are soaking it to remove phosphates for up to 2 months. Should I order it now and start soaking it?

1st question. What should I be doing while I'm waiting for it to come in??

Work overtime and start selling stuff you won't need anymore like TV's, this hobby ain't cheap! Make room in the freezer as you'll need half the space for fish foods, buy the wife something nice...
Get a Spectrapure RODI system and you'll never look back - starting out with the best water possible is by far one of the most important things to ensure a good start. I moved to the next level when I bought a Spectrapure MaxCap and a lot of problems disappeared almost over night!

If you buy Marco brand Key Largo dry rock, you will not need to "cook" it, it comes RTU. I used all new Marco rock in my 185 and never had PO4 problems, great stuff!

Best advice to anyone new is to just keep reading and learning. Don't listen to one person's advice, research the hell out of it. I think I have read more in regards to this hobby than I ever did in college; I certainly learned more as now I have unofficial degrees in plumbing, electrician, LED engineer, ichthyologist, rock scape, aqua farmer, acrylic fabrication AND chemist! haha

Bugs713 thanks for the info. I love the way that rock looks. Already contacted SpectraPure and plan to buy a MaxCap D2 add on. Not sure how many GPH my RO system gets but its probably going to take 2 days to make enough DI to fill my tank. My RO unit is putting out about 430ppm. So Im expecting no problems getting <5ppm. Adempster what kind and how much rock do you have?

Here is what I'm planning to buy for pumps. My tank is gong to be in my LV right next to my couch so I need it to be quite. 2 Tunze 6095 power heads and a Tunze 1073.040 return pump. I'm also considering the Sicce Silent 4 for my return. Curve 7 skimmer. Aqueon ProFlex Model 3 sump. What do you guys think? Any issues with what I listed?

Your tds should be alot less then that out of the ro by it self,

you will deplete your di resin real fast with 430 tds.

my ro is 90-110 and di is 0

my system water is high it fluctuates. from 400-550 I replace my sediment and carbon filters every 2 months.

something isn't right with your system.

as for rocks, its a mix nothing specific.

wast your money on a Aqueon ProFlex Model 3 sump they don't hold up good and not made that good

Geemanaz I'm limited on space. My stand internal dimentions are 28x28x26. I was also looking at an Elite Aquatics Model 1 sump but its only 11g. Any recommendations? Anyone with a sump that would fit inside my stand?

I have a proflex 3 sump that I bought used for a really good price from a member on here (thanks Chad!). It works well for me but I modified it for my sump. The stand/sump space you have is pretty close to my dimensions as well. If you can get the proflex 3 sump for a good price and good condition (no crazing), then go for it. Otherwise, you can create your own with a 20g long and cut glass for baffles.
