wow, that is quite stupid. I wonder how long those have been in though. I wonder if it is like a fish hook though. Supposedly fish have an enzyme in their mouth that will dissolve a fishhook over time, that is why if you can't get a hook out, it is just better to leave it in.

Steel hooks will dissolve in freshwater and even faster in saltwater. Caught many a fish with that. Don't know about the enzyme thing tho...
