Hey everyone, like I said before, this is my first post here and basically my first adventure into the salt water fish world. Well, I am interested in getting into it as a hobby, and have already gotten some information over at 6speed from some buddies. I was wondering if you guys think that it is better to maintain your own tank as a beginner, or to have a service do it for you? I'm a younger kid, so I was wondering if you guys think that it wouldn't be wise to dump the time and money into the hobby until im out of school? Also, how would I move the tank and its contents if I were to move? Sorry for all the dumb questions. Thanks!

Also, is there any literature or sites that you would recommend I read to gain some more knowledge? Thanks again!

As you have seen this hobby is pretty expensive, but if you can afford to pay someone, I say go for it! I think most of us here like working on our own tanks.

I would recommend if you are going to move a tank at some point, do yourself a favor and go barebottom. Theres no point to establishing a good sand bed to have to throw it out when you move.

Welcome friend. This is your first step to success asking questions. You will have to learn and probably do tons of reading. I think you should maintain your tank and go slowly about getting fish and corals. Reef tanks are like wine the older they are the more beautiful they look.As for spending money everyone here spends as much as they wish and can afford.Myself I just had to take a second mortgage and refinance my house just to feed the fish. WELCOME

Well I'm a college student and have three tanks, but its gonna be hard to move everything when I have to. So I'd ask how determined are you? I was an addicted from when I first started, so for me it was an easy question to answer. For taking care of the tank, its much better if you gain the knowledge yourself about cleaning and husbantry for your tank. To move the fish you'll probably have to have a separate tank or tub to put everything in while you move and set up the main tank.

Would you guys recommend starting out with a fish only tank, versus a live reef tank? Also, Why is it not possible to transport the sand when you move?

fish only tanks are much cheaper
they dont require the lighting and skill like reefs. fish only gets your foot in the door. then people usually try at reefs. that what i did
