I'm setting up a 180g....just curious how you plumbed it and if you have any pix? Looks like your overflows are those bulkheads in the back.....My new (used) aquarium also lacks an overflow box

This tank does have an overflow. I believe it's a 2" drainline.

I reduced the drain size from 2" to 1.5" into the sump

The three holes you were looking at are actually returns for my closed loop. I think they are 1.5" each. I use an ampmaster 3000 for the closed loop pump.
