Well im geting some new power heads for my 55gal, want to know if it would be best to go with 2x1200 or 2x900? i dont want so much flow the fish cant rest but i want enough. Return from sump is around 400-600gph i think.
Thanks

Go with 1200s, I have 3 and a tunze 1600 and 700gph return and for asom flow. I have yet to have a heat issue w/ the 1200s, if I turn them off the temp dosent drop more than a degree. I dont think 2 1200 and 400-600 retun will be enuf flow. HTH

I would definately go with 1200's in a 55, especially if that's all you have for flow. I have two in a 29 FWIW.

2 maxi 1200's and around a 500 gph return wont be enough flow? Thats 1090gph. I forget what flow your supposed to shoot for, Is it 10x your display volume?

Is it 10x your display volume?

More like at least 20X(or more) for a typical mixed reef. It's all in how you use it it but that's a good general # to shoot for. The fish will enjoy it, not hate it, in fact they would likely prefer more:)
Your tank will also aprechiate the added flow due to increased oxygenation and the more effecient use of the bacterial surfaces present in your tank;)

I'm a stickler for efficiency. The 1200s use 230% more power for a 27% increase in flow. For the 40W and 590 GPH of flow of (2) MJ1200s, you could have (3) MJ 900s with 690 GPH for 25.5W which is a little more power than 1 MJ1200. maybe not a big deal, but again, I like efficiency.

The 1200 handles head a lot better than a 900. If you have anything connected to the pump like a Hydor or any plumbing, it is much better.

Or....maybe a SEIO is another idea

M820 820gph 18W
M1100 1100gph 21W

Very good point...if you don't mind cleaning/positioning one more powerhead.

Yup 3 powerheads can get kind of busy...but on the positive side, you can have more diverse flow.

I've never used the SEIO pumps (I use Tunze), but have heard the 620s are kind of weak. You could probably use (2) 820s?? The output is for aiming, it does not move. Most people dont use it and run the SEIO "Tunze style"
The Hydor Flo works well, but needs some umpf to move it. As I posted earlier, I would use the MJ 1200s if you want to use them.

If you want to go the SEIO route, I would post a new thread with that in the title to get some responses.

thanks a bunch, I think i will give the maxi jets with the hydor flow a try unless i hear some bad things about them. I think my tank would benefiet from the more random flow, but i will be adding more heat and they are less efficient. Oh well, my fingers are crossed so its gotta work right?
Thanks again.

I ran a seio 620 and a seio 1100 for a long time in my 55 (with a southdown DSB). I wanted more flow so I went to some modded mj 1200s. I am now running two mj 900s with the propeller mod, nothing beats that for efficiency. They use about 8 watts each and put out about 1500 GPH each.

What you are thinking about is definitely not too much flow for a 55. IMO it's not even close to enough if you want to keep SPS. Including my return I have about 3500 GPH in my 55.
