I'd have cropped more of the right and bottom edges off the first pic. Large out of focus objects in the foreground, like the tentacle tip, can be distracting, but I do think your placement of the focal plane is where it ought to be.

I like the clam "nipple". ;)

I appreciate your constructive criticism. It's hard to get lots of it in focus given how far the focal length is. This was shot at f/8 if I recall correctly. I could have gone to 11 but I don't know if my shutter would have been high enough. Will try again soon.

Are you using a tripod? I find a tripod allows me to use much longer shutterspeeds than I ever could handholding. It's not so useful with fast moving fish but with stationary corals it makes a huge difference for me in the range of apertures I can choose from to get the shot.

Yes, with coral macros, a tripod is a must. I still don't shoot anything below 1/50 using a tripod though. Having a shutter delay of 2 seconds helps as well.
