2 questions

Hey all. Got 2 separate questions for you if you could be so kind as to take a look?

Got this hammer coral, been in around 3 weeks now and seems to be doing very nicely. There seems to be growth on the main branch, is this a new head growing? Sorry pics are as good as I can get due to its position in the tank.

Second question, what is this growing by my zoas, is it hair algae and is it bad?

Thank you

Can't see well enough in either picture but second does seem to be some hair algae and no its not "bad".. It looks like a tiny/minor amount easily removable..

How do I remove hair algae? Silly lawnmower blenny not eat it?

I would say that what you see on the Hammer is not a new bud. It's difficult (impossible?) to say just what it is due to the quality of the picture, but it deciding to "sprout" a new head in the middle of it's stalk (old dead skeleton) is unlikely.

And yes to hair algae amongst your none too happy zoanthids. I'd consider plucking as much of it away as possible and perhaps even removing the rock from the tank and carefully treating the affected areas with a little H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). Allow it to soak on for 30 seconds or so then rinse in old tank water. That should get rid of it for you before it has the chance to spread any further.

Its hard to see but if the zoas/algae are on some sort of frag plug then just pull that and dip it in some old tank water/hydrogen peroxide (50/50 mix) for like 5-10 minutes..
The simply rinse with some more old tank water and put it right back into the tank..

The peroxide will kill the algae by over oxidizing it..

They are on a small piece of rock thst I stuck on the main rock. I has zoas on and a sponge.

I never really understood the value of CUC.
Over the years, I have found them next to useless (but not totally) and in my latest rebuild I fired the entire crew except for snails and 1 lawnmower.
I swapped them all for consistent on point water parameters with weekly changes, a moderate photoperiod and only the PAR necessary to achieve coral growth. In addition I hired myself to pull and pluck those tiny bits of algae which do pop up from time to time.
Got this from a guy who manages a large aquarium.....boy was he right...

. This is what a hammer coral new polyp looks like. I've fragged mine twice. I wait for them to grow about 1/8" heads before giving to friends.

I suspect the bump on the Hammer coral is probably a Vermited Snail, easy to scrape off but not really harmful .

Depends on how happy they are. The three new heads I have are about 1/16" right now, in about a month, I should have a nice head growing. By 2 months, it will be ready to frag if I want. But, I think I will keep at least two of these new heads.
