I'm wanting this for SH. What do you think I could put into it? I want captive of course. Maybe I should focus on pipefish instead? but they are wild caught. prob. not as hardy? i'd love to mix them, but haven't read good things about that.

If you are diligent about water changes, you could put a pair of erectus or anything smaller than erectus in a tall 20 gallon hex. If you can get a chiller, H. Capensis would be a perfect candidate for that size tank.

Ocean Rider (www.seahorse.com) has a kit for such a tank. It comes w/ everything; tank, filtration... and a pair of H. Erectus.

Reidi could work but in my honest opinion I think a smaller horse or bigger tank would do you better. I'm not trying to give you a slaes pitch but a 29g tall or 37g tall both are fairly cheap on the tank side. My LFS has the 37g's for $60. That would almost double your water quanity and greatly improve your margin of error.

Most people coming into the hobby think they'll start off with a small tank and see how it goes. The problem is that a small tank is so much more work then a larger system. Larger systems are more stable by design, and tend to be IME much less work then the smaller tanks. I've kept a range of tanks between 2.5g and 75g and will tell you for me the larger tanks are always more fun and less work.

Reidi as a species are great. Pretty hardy and fun to watch. YOu might also want to look into Kuda, or erectus. Both of those can be found at seahorsesource.com or dracomarine.org.

No matter which tank you go with or what species you decide I would urge you to buy directly from a breeder. It's the best way to ensure quaility seahorses.

Ok lets stop you right there. Oceanrider is a VERY confusing sight if you dont know their products well. lol They have many different kinds of the same seahorses that they breed.

As far as erectus go, they have two main breeds that they trademark. Sunbursts and Mustangs.
They are technically the same species, just as poodles are the same species as Great Danes. However, they are different breeds. Sunbursts tend to be lighter colored than Mustangs, usually adopting a yellow, or orange color base. Mustangs usually go for darker colors like purple, brown, and sometimes even black. Both are H. Erectus though, and both can interbreed.

The two things that you were refering to are both for Mustangs. The latter was one of their specails where you get a mated pair of Mustangs, and some other stuff.

The former was just the regular Mustang (no special)

Before you go and order from ocean rider, you might want to take a look at www.seahorsesource.com , another CB breeder which is just as reputable, (and less expensive!) Also, the founders are very helpful members on this forum!

i'd like to try a shell for a feeding station. Where should I put the feeding station? at the bottom, toward the top where it would be easier to put the food in it? does it matter?
