There were three. They had to be separated. They have a survival strategy where they eat each others legs and claws if they cant find enough food. So you have 3 legged crabs. Then they molt and they have all 8 again but little ones. Next molt and they are normal sized again.
One became quite tame and would come out of the water if it saw you.
