2000G Saltwater Aquarium

Hey everyone, unfortunately, I do not currently have the named tank, however I have been hired to provide a 2000G setup for a client.

I have dealt with systems up to 500G, but this is beyond my previous experiences. Are there any suggestions as to where to shop for the proper filtration components for a setup of this size?

I also have my own renovation company and am familiar with Structural Engineers for their assistance with providing reports and whatnot.

Limited information so far, but here's what I got:
-2000G assuming display. Recommendations on sump& refugium size?
-Location is in a basement. May need to be built on site somehow.
-Due to the size, I am going to assume acrylic
-Due to acrylic and size, I am going to assume $50,000+
-Will need electrical panel upgrade I am sure
-Not sure if new house or existing.
-Not sure of actual reef or acrylic reef
-Budget is around $60K-$75K for the aquarium project.

PS. There may be a 5000G tank in the fall as well.
 
No offense but I'd be a bit ****ed if I hired someone for a tank only to find out they are surfing a forum on how to do what I asked.

I wouldn't accept the project if I didn't think I could handle it. I've had tanks for 20 years so I have a pretty good idea of how to do it. Just seeing if anyone has any tips or has had a similar tank in the past.

Forums would be pointless if people were scared to ask a question.

Chances are I will be partnering with a larger company to learn how to do these setups properly, but since I was excited about it, thought I would see what info was out here.

And also, if you are ever asked to do something you are unsure of how to do, do you just guess how to do it, or do you research every possibility to find out as much information as possible before deciding to commit to it or not? I think forums have an abundance of first hand knowledge and resources.

Or... use this opportunity to learn how to do such a setup and do something to make the tank owner and himself proud. My suggestion is to be upfront with the owner and tell them that this will be your first extra large tank and tell them that there's info aplenty on forums such as reef central and see if they're still willing to give you a shot. If not sub it out and make some cash. Lol haha :lolspin:

Hi there!!!!! I think it is cool....and very responsible on your part to find out as much as you can about what needs to be done to build a 2000 gallon tank. I would be exited too. Sounds like a great project. There are a lot of places you can find on the web that builds custom acrylic tanks and sumps etc...I found a place in Chicago that does just that...sorry I can't remember the name right now...if I do I will let ya know.

Also....don't listen to some of these negative people on this forum...some are nice and like to help....others won't answer your posts if you don't belong to their click.

I am sure most of us think it is great you are asking questions before embarking on this project. If I were hiring someone to do a 2000 gallon aquarium build for me....I would want them to ask as much questions and get as much help as they needed. After you are done.....post some pics! Good luck on your project
 
I vote sub it out man. You can learn from them and you will protect yourself from getting over your head which in return will safeguard your reputation.

I don't see it as bad that you're looking for help. Passing up an opportunity like that would be a missed chance to greatly strengthen your business and knowledge. Not to mention your portfolio/ wallet.
 
As pointed out earlier, get ahold of Aquarium Engineering. The owner, Bill Wann, is the man who has the 20,000 gallon aquarium in his living room. Super nice guy too!! He makes all kinds of things, but has recently been posting about a "baby skimmer" as he calls it that would probably be about right for a 2k gallon tank.
 
Thanks everyone for the comments and tips. Always going to be haters, can't prevent that, but I can sure prove them wrong.

As a multiple business owner and athlete, I've learned to battle through adversity and rise as a better and more knowledgeable person and business owner.

That's basically the idea. In my experience, the systems carry mostly the same components, just a bigger scale. That's why my main question was regarding suppliers. Also, suppliers selling large components will have knowledge in this area I could ask about as well.

Hater??? I just said if I was the person I'd be upset. For all I know you told them you don't have the experience, wasn't mentioned so I put my thoughts and now I'm a Hater.

I don't have time or the money for people to learn while they do work for me. Nor in the industry I'm in allow for that. Just personal experience.

I didn't directly call anyone a hater. Your comment did, however, come off a bit offensive instead of helpful like I had specifically asked in my post.

I value all opinions, good or bad. But the helpful ones are always more appreciative from my perspective as opposed to the ones saying "I'd be F-ed if I hired you".
