Hello everyone. I've been contemplating setting up a 20gal nano for some time, I just haven't got around to it. I moved a couple of years ago and had to part with a 55 reef that I had, and I just haven't set anything up since. I've been reading and refreshing myself on all of the different aspects of reefkeeping (many things I had overlooked or forgot about), and I have a 20gal high aquarium that I'd like to use.
I've decided on lighting that I would use (VHO - two 70watt) and I know what I want to keep, but I'd like to know more about power filters being used as fuges. With a 20, I don't want to have a bunch of plumbing running everywhere, and I also have a space limitation that has kept me from reef keeping in the first place. I've developed a space for my RO/DI unit, made an inventory of all my equipment, and all I need to purchase is lighting at this point. I have numerous power filters and power heads available to me, including a Penguin 280 and 330 filter. The bio-wheels would be removed of course : ) I've seen several designs and recommendations in the past, but what about now? Is a 20gal too big to use a power filter as a fuge? What would be the most space saving, yet functional method?
What about skimming? The only reef I have experience with is a 55 gal that had a 20gal long fuge and I had a skimmer. Is a skimmer needed, or can I control this small volume of water with water changes only?
I appreciate all suggestions. Basically, I have all the knowledge I need for lighting and what to keep, I just need to know how to convert a power filter into a fuge
This would help my space issue tremendously. I could probably figure it out on my own, but I'd like to hear of any success stories I want as massive water flow as possible without becoming a toilet, with as little noise as possible. As always, thanks guys and gals for your suggestions. Reef on!
