20k metal h ?????????????

"I love my 10k."

that has nothing to do with his question.

I like toast.

teeki_tako, I have a 20K XM 400w. It's a nice blue with a little more par than the radium but not much. I believe the XM bulb is a little cheaper also. You can not go wrong with one or the other.

Ballast plays a big part in performance of the bulb. Think of the bulb as a Race Car. Now think of the different types of fuels (street gas: regular, plus, and premium; race grade gas). Each car/bulb will perform differently based on the type of fuel/ballast you run it on.

What type of ballast are you running for a better bulb selection?

Radiums are crap if not put on the appropiate ballast. Radiums need to be ran on a pulse start ballast or a electronic ballast for the best use out of the bulb.

Would a 250w XM 20k still be very good for a 75g Standard (SPS dominated)?

If you had two of them.

I currently run 2*250 XM 20Ks over my 58, and have been very pleased with the color and the growth. I did order some Radiums last night, since my bulbs are due to be changed, and to see which ones I like best. But, the Radiums better be pretty darn good. :)

This may sound crazy but the single ended 20K bulbs you can get on Ebay for a fraction of the price work as well as XM's. I used them for several years with GREAT color and growth. STAY AWAY from any 15 - 20K double ended bulbs on Ebay. They are 10-12k at best.

radium 400w with coralvue ballasts... very happy...

tried ebay bulbs a few times but it wasn't worth it for me...

before my radium run, i liked hamilton 14k bulbs... like the balance, but my tastes have now turned to maximum blue...

Been there done that with the ebay bulbs. Don't bother, they are not as bright as XM or Radium. I've had them fired side by side.

I love my 10k also....... esp Ushio 250w moguls on ice cap ballasts. Bright white. I don't like blue tanks though. I also run 1 vho URI actinic and 1 vho 50/50. Thats plenty of blue.

Another for the Radiums, I ran 250W on Icecaps, with no supplementation. Loved the color, and output was good too. Plenty for my SPS.

nobody mentioned the USHIO 20k? i am actually thinking about trying those out next...

as long as we are on the topic... sourdough lightly toasted, dry (no butter) with strawberry jam.... oh so good... my fav at IHOP...
