20L frag/grow out tank

tank will be used mainly for green star polyps for now, with SPS and zoanthids in the future. I want the water to flow lengthwise. Water will be coming in one end through a bulkhead and then out of a spraybar, and will exit the opposite side with 1 or 2 1" bulkheads. The 20L will only be filled up halfway to permit the use of cheaper lighting. No substrate is going to be used.

The tankw ill be connected to my 30g display, a 20g fuge, and a 15g sump. The water needs to be pumped a total length of 6' or so, with an elevation change of approx. +3.5 feet. I'm trying to decide what the best pump would be for this application. I was thinking mag 7? what about a mag 9.5 with the output split between the display and the grow out tank? i need some advise on this whole thing.

I have a 20L plumbed together with my 75 and it shares a sump with the 75. I have a seperate pump to go to the grow tank. I would recommend filling it all the way and building shelves to fit in it. I used pvc/egg crate to build my shelves. Just put some T5s above it and you cna grow anything... i do. If you want to use one pump to do it all a mag 7 wont be enough. Go a little bigger and get a mag 12. Im going to use my Mag 24 for both my tanks. Not enough water flow for them both, but enough for filter flow... ill supplement flow in the 75 with my genx 55 and 2 penductors and in the prop tank with a mag 7 conencted to my flow shelves.

My flow shelves are PVC frame, 2 layers in step fashion, all connected with special PVC fittings to make it a complete box. THen i drilled hole in it randomly throughout Once i did that i connected the mag 7 to it, it takes suction from the tank and forces water through the shelves and out the holes creating GREAT water movement.

i forgot to mention the overflow on the display is a cpr cs50 (300 gph max). I would like to buy one large pump and T the output for both tanks, as this would (most likely) reduce heat. Currently the system water is a toasty 81.1 WITH a fan blowing across the uncovered top.

Would a mag 12 be too much volume for the overflow/prop tank combo?

Sounds interesting. I'd love to see a pic of your setup.

Ill take some detailed photos tommorow when i get home to show it. The one thing is, ill be taking it completely apart next weekend bc im building a new stand that will house both the reef and the 20L... Ill also be redoing every stick of plumbing too, im not 100% happy with it yet. Its good, but not GREAT.
