Dual Beckett MR-2 in action. It started foaming within a couple hours of having salt water in the tank.

I mounted the ballasts up between the floor joists just to keep them out of the way.

looks sweet! have you thought about covering the back of the tank?

Absolutely. My original idea was to make some sort of removable panels to black out the sides and back. That idea ended when I decided to do the closed loop. Well, at least for the back of the tank. I want to be able to see in the back now and then for maintenance, so I don't want to paint it.

Anyone got an idea?

I also found my royal gramma...or I should say what was left of him. He was being worked over pretty good by several hermits. If that is the only loss I have, I will count my blessings and move on.

that really sucks about your fish.
the panel idea will be tough. maybe someone else will chime in with some kind of idea.

Looks Amazing

Looks Amazing

Hey bud,

It looks amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it. I can't believe all the work you put into this.

That just might work. Thanks Mr pink Floyd. My first idea came from RalfP's TOTM. He uses some sort of panel system that hangs from the rim of the tank. This becomes impossible with all the closed loop plumbing. But if I break it up into smaller sections, I can have some semi-permanent pieces, and some easily removable. hmmm...this weekend maybe!

I still have some other work to take care of.

I need to adjust my standpipes. One is too high, the other gurgles a little.

I have a small drip coming from the gate valve leading out of the skimmer (not enough Teflon tape I guess).

I need to install some baffles in the sump. I made a couple of temporary bubble traps by having the returns and skimmer dump into a 4" PVC full of bioballs and exit at a bunch of holes near the bottom. I still have some micro bubbles getting back into the tank, but not many considering I have no baffles in the sump!

Need to install a vent fan down there. There is a small window, which I have open for now. But eventually (like this winter) I will want to close the window.

My utility sink hasn't' been installed yet. My plumber friend got hurt racing his dirt bike and ended up in the hospital for a couple of days. Excuses excuses..haha.

I need to mount the RO/DI and get a water change system built up.

I am sure there is more...

One of the best ideas I had was to T off my return pump and run a section of PVC up and over to the drains for the washing machine. You can see it heading up here in the pic of the timmers. To empty the sump, All I have to do is open this valve and close another, and the water is pumped down the drain!

Your system looks great. I run the same drain system, makes you actually enjoy water changes. I feel really smug when I think of my days siphoning and carrying buckets. I have a brute with a mag12 in it that is switched back to my main panel. I also have a mech float valve in the brute so after I flip the switch to pump in ASW I turn on the ro/di and fill it back up. :D

Stinky!!

Stinky!!

I cleaned the skimmer for the first time today. I must say, if the odor of the skimmate is a measure of skimmer performance, then my dual beckett is kicking some butt !!!

Its been back together and running for about 10 minutes, and its already foaming again. I have a feeling most of the success has to do with the pump.

I also pulled out what test kits I had and tested the water. My nitrates, nitrites and ammonia were ZERO! The PH seemed a little high, about 8.6, but I am suspect of the test kit. Actually, I am suspect of all the test kits. So, my next purchase will be some new ones.

What do people recommend for brand and type??? I know sailfert is popular, what else is good? And what kits should I be getting?????

I've become partial to the Salifert NO3, KH, Ca and Po4 tests. I've found the SeaTest/FasTest Alk and Calcium to also be fairly reliable and much easier to use although not as precise as the salifert. These are the only ones I bother spending any serious money on. Maybe pick up a cheap ammonia in case of emergency. I'm sure some will suggest Mg as well but I have never seen a need to test for it nor a need to dose it....

New Fish!

New Fish!

So I took a hard look at the fish I was keeping and made some decisions. I am taking out the Niger Trigger, striped damsels and lemonpeel angel. These have all been caught and are currently in my sump.

It their place, I have gotten 4 yellow tangs and 5 female lyretail anthias, 1 male. I also picked up a fire clownfish, which is now snuggling with the RBTA I got from Greg (Ancient Storm) a few weeks back.

Thanings are going well so far. I'm going to order some new test kits today so I can make sure Things are going well.!
