215g Caribbean Inspired Reef

I understand about how long it takes to fill a 215 when you dont have a 100g storage tank. took me 3 days to fill mine. finished filling yesterday.

im not at home or I would fire up my loop, its a good thing because we need to let the water clear from the new sand. took 48 hours to get %90 clarity

Eazy check out the info in post #13. It explains it a lot better than I could.

I have had DSB tanks before with really good results. A well functioning DSB is full of bacteria that actually help the nitrogen cycle-not hinder it.

I just moved my 150 which had a DSB that was up for 3 years...I'll be rinsing the sand, but the point I want to make is this:

This bed was built on a plenum. Now I know there are studies showing this doesn't result in more effecient denitrifaction, however I have read that it keeps toxic areas from forming by allowing a small amount of movement under the bed.

I have moved my tank several times in the last 5 years and before this last move I never used a plenum and the sand was STINKY!! when taking it out...not so with the plenum...don't know if means anything but I'll always use one now.

I'm a firm believer in DSBs and have used them every since I got into the hobby 15 years ago.

Yeah I definitely don't plan on moving it. I realize there is going to be stuff in there that I don't want exposed to the surface.
In fact when I tore down my last tank (125g burst in the middle of the night) I didn't use any of that sand in my emergency 75g. I just went barebottom for the time being.

I would only reuse that sand after washing it clean.

I did the plenum thing before (several years ago) and couldn't really tell a difference.

I am hoping this tank will be something I can enjoy for a really long time (and not break apart in the middle of the night) so once the jawfish are happy with their burrows it should stay pretty undisturbed. :)

I love this build so far...any updates?

p.s Am looking forward to seeing the jawfish community thriving in such a well-planned out tank...great job.

Thanks :)

Still finishing off the cycle!
My only noticable progress was that I put some Dragon's Breath Macro in so I have something to look at while I wait...

I love that moring pic... I really like it looks great what othe fish are you going to get that are carbbean fish...

...that's why I call it 'Caribbean inspired' rather than a biotope.
I have some non-Caribbean fish in my old tank that will be moving over and messing up my Caribbean theme.
The only 'native' fish I might add are chalk basslet and rusty gobies.
I just can't let go of my old fish.

Thanks!
The jawfish arrived Wednesday and I finally found 5 out of the 6 today (Friday). Feeling a little better now. Guess it just takes them some time to settle in.
There so fun to watch though! I am enjoying my unusual set up quite a bit :)

very cool build, i like the background lighting, i think it mimic'd your reference pics PERFECTLY! a job to be proud of dude

Can we get some pictures or action videos of the jawfish playing in your DSB? I'd love to watch them I want a blue head jawfish so bad they are awesome!

Not sure how to post videos
It worked!

The pair is threatening a PJ Cardinal -who is clearly impressed...NOT

The tank looks great Karin! I'm really loving the shadowbox. Have you thought of putting a purple spot in the shadowbox to see if you get a moonlight effect in the tank?

Thanks. I haven't thought about much else in regards to the shadowbox. Having so much fun with the stocking right now!
And yes the jawfish are adorable and fascinating. Definitely worth the trouble :)
