225 Reef 490 gal total system Build Thread

So I guess I'll start my own thread about my progress here. I just started with fish a few months ago and I don't see anyone saying that they wish they had a smaller tank so i guess I am going to go big from the start. I plan on having a 3 tank system on a shared sump with a completion date of ~ august 2009 (completion meaning there is at least 1 fish in the 225). Also as something different I will keep track of prices, but I wont tell my fiance where the thread is. Oh god if she only knew.

Right now I have the following

65 Gallon RR Tank - Temporary Predator tank, eventual display refugium with DSB, Jawfish and chaeto in a sectioned off area.

Running on a Berlin XL skimmer and 150-175 lbs of live rock and a rubbermaid sump. Flow is provided by a eheim 600 gph submersible return pump and 2x 1200 GPH ebay powerheads. Lighting is a simple 30 watt 50-50 T12 bulb.
65 Gallon RR Tank

Stocking: Currently Mollies and a rotting shrimp: Will add the following (don't worry they will move to a 125 before august):

Dog Faced Puffer
Volitan Lion
Harlequin Tusk
Snowflake Eel
Kole Eye Tang
Dragon Wtrasse
Rabbit Fish of sort

Thats it for what is set up now.

In the garage i have the following:
225 gallon acrylic peninsula tank 6'x2'x30" high
-4x Little Giant MD4 Pumps (I will sell these before setting it up and replace with a lower wattage low pressure submersible)
-Black laminate Wooden Stand (I will likely sell this as well and build my own, not sure yet).
-2x 250w MH ballasts mogul and lamp (need reflectors and to build a canopy)
-2x 100w VHO with ballast and moguls (ditto)
-Chiller (wont need will be sold)
-Ozone generator (debating if I will use will need to buy a controller...)
-A DIY (I think) skimmer. It is just a tube inside a box with a neck and a cup, dont have any of the lines of pumps needed to run it. I think I will sell it to someone looking to make a DIY skimmer with a modded pump type deal as it is a nice piece of acrylic tube)

What i will be buying in the next 8 months.

I am looking for a 125g RR tank to use for the predator tank, RR with stand and canopy with simple lighting, like a 100w VHO 50/50.
ASM G-4X Skimmer - I am on a bit of a budget and I would like to avoid paying much over 500 for the skimmer and this seems to fit the bill.
Low pressure return pumps for the 225
4 more of the 1200 gph ebay powerheads (assuming they last for a while)
Another ~200 lbs of LR

Overall plan.

In the end I want the tank setup as follows
225 Reef
125 Predator
65 Refugium/Jawfish
75 Sump below the 225
ASM G4x in the 75 gal sump
Submersible return pumps (I guess I will need 3 with one alot bigger then the other two

Stocking:

225:
Large Tangs, school of ~7 anthias (lyretail?), mandarin goby, other interesting reef safe fish. Wrasses that don't need sand (are there any?) Mixed Corals, mostly acro and softies I suspect.

125:
Listed Above

65:
~12 Jawfish, possible other sand sifting gobies I will need to research what I could have in there with the jawfish and no rocks etc.

Thougts:

I will be running BB in the 225 and 125 and sump is this acceptable?
Lionfish will be purchased tomorrow I imagine.

Cost to date:
65g, rubbermaid sump, skimmer, 50-50 in the 65 $220
Heaters 2x Stealth 150w $50
Live Rock $300
225 Tank and stand and Little Giant pumps, crappy skimmer, stand, chiller lights $600
Plumbing $20
Ebay Powerheads $37
Salt: $120

Total: $1347

Pictures will follow maybe tomorrow, LMK if there is anything special you want to see.

Noone in town has a lion fish that is eating frozen, if I am going to have to train it myself I will get it online after christmas along with a DFP and dragon wrasse. Is this a bad idea to get all three at once? I can put one in the 30g quarantine and the two healthier looking ones into the tank? It will have been set up for a month at that point using fully cured LR (150 lbs) and with 5 mollies living in it with a rotting shrimp from the grocery store.

I have had to put my anemone in the 65 temporarily and I may need to resell it. When i put it in my 10g under 26w of home depot screw in power compact it shriveled up within a day and was spitting out its mouth. When i put it in the 65 with a 250 MH and a 50/50 NO flourescent it started to look better right away. I only had it for about 48 hours when I moved it. Was this more likely to do with the water quality or the light?

The 65 looks alot better with the MH as well, lots of shimmer... It's held in place with zip ties though and the reflector is a baking sheet, so I guess we'll see if that melts...

Is there any cheap source of MH reflectors and VHO reflectors?

lookin' good so far Kevin. Be sure to keep this guy updated as make more progress on the tank(s). It'll be interesting to see how you bring all those tanks together on a single system.

Anemone is hiding this morning. I think he didn't like the high flow where he was at. Hope he comes out on his own I'm not even home to help.

How are the tanks going to be arranged and plumbed in your house, since you're going for a shared sump? I'm interested in these sorts of larger setups so I can dream about the day I leave rental properties :)

Finally someone posted in my thread but I don't have a good answer. I'm not 100% sure yet myself! I am really hoping that I can get it where the Peninsula tank is dividing a room with each of the other two on the wall it comes off of. This will allow me to run just .75" PVC or so out to each of them along the baseboard and hide it behind couches etc. Another possibility is that the predator tank will be set up as an L to the 225 and have the 225 be off the wall 2 feet with a cabinet there holding a lot of the controls etc. That is Ideal but then you need quite a bit of open space.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea, then I can just run the pipes under the floor and back up. I am trying to avoid having to run high pressure pumps though due to the $500 extra per year that they will run me in electricity. I don't see why you couldn't run this with a LP pump though since there is no net head loss. Just an extra bit of friction pressure which is solved with bigger tubes.

If they need to be in different rooms I will certainly do that. If I can keep them in the same room I will simply hide the tubes with furniture if possible.

Anemone died last night I'm told. I dont know what happenned for sure since I'm not home, perhaps the tank was still cycling. It looked healthy for the first two days in the tank and I never saw any change in ammonia nitrite or nitrate from 0.

So I got home and... The anemone isn't dead Katie couldnt find it but she found the shrimp that was in the tank rotting. She thought that was the anemone (i have no idea how) and she threw that out. When i got home the anemone and the clown fish she couldnt find were just behind some rocks. I think i need to hire a tank sitter ;)

I got some reflectors for the 250 MH. I will build these into my custom canopy when I make it. I am thinking more and more of making all the stands myself. The 6x2 Stand is for sale.

Got my first two real fish the other day. No new word on equipment other then I have most if the tools to make the stand now including a table saw.

Here is the Dog Faced Puffer

And another blurry pic of my clown/anemone pair

How do I take that not blurry? Im using a sony P&S i think its a T40? It was high end 26 months ago :S

Forgot to add prices:

Clown and Anemone: $65 (next day saw a pair in a RBTA for $100... great)
DFP & DW + 1 Peppermint sprimp: $40+40+7
Reflectors: $50 Shipped for Two

Total: $1352

The Dragon Wrasse died on tuesday, the DFP looked stressed for a bit but then calmed down. I also added a scribbled Rabbitfish. It was a good price and I really liked the look so I took a chance on it.

I got a 30gallon tank off CL for $25 with heater, stand light and airpump. I thought this was a great deal for a QT tank so it has been running now for 24 hours. It is filtered by a Fluval 403 and about 5 lbs of LR. I have one of my invincible SW mollies in it right now giving it some bio load. And I will QT all subsequent fish. Is there anything you would recommend that I treat the fish with if I don't see anything on it? Or only if it appears to need treatment.

I have started adding lime to my top off water. Katie found some pickling lime at the grocery store, so in it went, I only did about .25 teaspoons per gallon of top off water right now and will see how this affects pH and such.

Lastly There is a 125 rr tank for sale on CL right now with bottom center overflows, so I will check that out. It's a little pricy though I think at $400 for the tank, older oak stand, and canopy with ballast. I'll see how the stand looks in the morning.

Updated costs:

Rabbit Fish
$40
Lime
$3

$1395

I have debated adding the costs of the food here, and I think that I won't. I got about 1 lb each of Formula 1 Forumla 2 and Prime reef today for $52 (total) along with some freshwater food, a Fluval 2 2 heaters and all kinds of **** for $130 total. LFS going out of business and everything is 75% off...
