225 Reef 490 gal total system Build Thread

Update:

I got a 125 tank and stand. It is drilled, but only on the bottom. It is set up as a walk around tank right now, but I will see what the new house looks like and if that will work. The problem that it has is that the drilled bottom is only for 1/2" bulkheads. If I set this up to do a return and inflow then it is severely limiting flow. Is it safe to assume that if the bottom is drilled that it isn't tempered and that I can drill it again?

I also sold the stand to the 225 today, got $145 only for it after having it listed for quite a while, not very much but it was not attractive so we'll see what happens.

With the 125 I got a 2x 96w PC ballast, and a Little Giant 3 pump.

I also got a RK2 with expansion port and the pinpoint pH adapter. Need to scrounge up some calibration fluid.

Total Cost: Tank and acc $300
RK2 $300 shipped
Profit from selling stand $145

New total: $1850

This is getting pricy. I was hoping to keep it under $2.5k I might still not including livestock. We will see I guess. I still have to get a skimmer (ASM G4x for $250) and build the stand for the 225 walk around ($500?) so nope, can't make it! Oh well its fun so far.

This hobby has a way of sneaking up on me too. I missed my target on my current tank by about $1000. They were all conscious upgrades/decisions that I was happy to make but explaining that to the wifey was not always so fun. IE) My decision to make the structural part of my stand out of steel rather than wood was easy for me to make, hard for me to shake. She keeps the door to the dog house open at all times these days.

Sorry to hear about your wrasse. :(

I found your thread. Looks like a great project in the works. I don't know about that running tally thing, it might want to make you give up...... I know I quit that a long time ago....

I shoudl say that I don't care what it costs, I want to do it at least partially right and I'm by no means poor. I just wanted there to be a reference to others since I could not get a good idea of what running a big tank cost before I started except that it would be $2k+

I've been getting quotes for a tank and stand. I'm for sure getting a stand and its gonna be 1200 to 2200 and. Tank around 1500 If I go that way.

I got some new additions, no pictures yet, they are in the QT for a few weeks.

Bowder Blue Tang
Blonde Naso Tang
Copperband Butterfly.

I am not overstocked for a 65, or at least have fish that are too big for it, but it's only a few months, and i will sell them off if I have to I guess (from too much aggression). I got them for a good price, and I didnt order the power but it came in with my stuff and it looked to have such good color that I took it.

I ordered 5x 3x 50gal of reef crystals salt mix from DFS so that will tide me over for a while, $190 for that.

I am looking for a skimmer now, I am thinking that I will go with 2x MSX 250's with one now and one in about a year, is this a decent plan?

Don't know how to account for the salt but I guess it will be 85% for this system so new total is $2010? Lets go with that. Or maybe I should count the salt as maintenance like food and electricity and not include it. I'll think about it :p

I killed them all... They were in QT, I was doing water changes every day and dosing cupramine, testing with red sea copper test kit. Well I guess it wasn't accurate or something else happened, but I killed the powder, the blonde, and my rabbit fish and puffer :@ I know I had put more drops of cupramine in then the kit recommended, but I thought that the water changes were bringing the amount down so I was believing the test kit.

Damn fish.

On the up side I replaced the DFP and the rabbit fish with even nicer examples that I found this weekend, The DFP is very yellow and I've seen ones around this nice, including the one on Divers Den right now selling for over $100
