24 gallon Aquapod owners

Hey guys...
I originally posted this in the reef discussion. I didn't realize there was a nano reef forum so I am posting it here as well. How far down do you have your blue sponge? Is it basically even with the top of the overflow or do you have it down further. If down further...how far down? Does anyone out there have the Fission nano skimmer? If so....was it worth the money and where do you have it placed in your tank?

skimmer sux i just use it to airate the tank, its on a timer and only comes on at night so i dont have to look at all the crappy bubbles it adds. The blue sponge for me is a little below the overflow to allow the water to spill ontop of it. The sponge isnt completely submerged though.

I havent tried one, but I have read many times that the fission is not worth anything.

from my experience, the blue sponges are just nitrate traps and do more harm than good.
If you are using a skimmer (i recomend the aqua c remora) that will remove almost all particulate matter from the tank entirely.

i'm holding out to see how the new RedSea 29gallons turn out to be. But that blue spong is annoying, peices get all torn off taking it in and out of the compartment.

take out the sponge, you can never get it clean enough so it traps nitrates, use filter floss instead, throw it away when dirty and replace!!!

i throw mine away, but i actually cut the block up so there's more water flow. and it catches the stuff from the surface. still waiting for a better cube.....or i could just set up a tank myself, but where's the fun in that? there's also the truvu aquasystem cubes. but those are over priced for nothing.

I cut one of the blue sponges like a loaf of bread into (about) quarters. Each slice is about 2 1/2 inches thick. It fits snuggly at just about the surface skimmer level (the lower slots are all blocked). This removes ALOT of crap from the water. It also traps all the cyano when I blow it off of my rocks. I clean it out thoroughly about every third or forth day and replace it with a clean piece of sponge. Just rotate the sponges as you clean them so they have time to dry.

I pushed my sponge down about 1/2 inch from the top. I also place an old credit card in between the sponge and grate, leaving just about a 1/4" gap from the top of the overflow grates. It has greatly increased the surface skimming of the water, plus it gives you a nice little waterfall into the sponge, so you can see how much water is being moved. I rinse my sponges out once a week, and my nitrates are at zero. Jon

i also cut my spongs into about a two inch section. It seems to work great as it doesnt hurt flow and it catches alot of debree.

Do you use the same blue sponge each time or do you rotate bewtween 2 sponges?
