240 gallon mix reef redo

Hi guys I am new here. I have a 240 gallon mixed reef, well it was until it crashed last year. Lost all my sps and lps. I was away for work left the tank in the care of my old man. Big mistake from my side. It was all down hill from there. I almost took down the tank but something inside me said " are you @#$%&% $@#$%& %$#@#$$% insane"

I have been working on automating the system and getting the parameters stable.
It's looking better been using the red sea foundation as of this Monday I will be using the algae management. Once I am happy with the system and start adding sps and lps again I will start with the energy and colour management too.

I would like to update this thread as it progresses but I can be a little slack. I will try my best.
The system has to be fully stable with the auto dosing before my next offshore **** rotation.

Here are some pics of as it is now.

I am looking at upgrading my Skimmer. I still have the AquaMedic Protein Skimmer Turboflotor 1000. I have plans to upgrade my system and would like to get a Skimmer for the future but just concerned that it may be over kill for my current system. I am looking at the Reef Octopus sro5000 ext. I would like the current system to be mostly sps

A question I have is I have a DSB in my sump should it stay or should it go?
I have found that if you have a significant power outage of a half day to a day or so the deep sand bed can turn toxic and start producing hydrogen sulfide (H2SO4).

If the DSB is remote to the system you can easily close it off and isolate it from the system. If it is in the sump you have made it integral to the system and not easily removed.

If you have a generator for power back-up on your house/system this shouldn't be a concern for you. Another option is to have a UPS back-up on your main return pump. As long as you are circulating water over the DSB it should remain safe.

Thank you Dave. It is part of my sump unfortunately. Is it a great benefit to have one?

jbvdhp I have only been using it for a week now and so far I am happy with it.

My house was broken into early Tuesday morning. Every single communication device and my TV was stolen out my house while I was sleeping. Thank goodness they did not mess with my tank.

Only you can tell if your deep sand bed is a benefit for sure. When did you add it? What differences did you see before and after? A DSB can help lower nitrates if your system is producing a lot of them, but there are so many factors involved no-one but you can follow and measure things to be sure.
