240 Inwall Construction (Image Intense)

Thank you. I frag corals regularly but only for local reefers as I prefer not to have to deal with the whole shipping aspect. Sorry.

But it's a "dry" heat.

 Yeah right. I spent just about every Summer as a kid in the Delta and nearly melted my Boston butt each time.

Joseph, ever consider installing solar panels?

Sorry but I missed this post. The answer is yes but at the time, a few years back, the numbers didn't work out. In a case like mine, which is heavy electrical use and always the majority of the use in the highest pricing tier (currently $0.36/Kwh), it just wouldn't help enough without having to add a huge array of panels. Which would drive the cost of the system up to a level that would move the point of payback out so many years that we wouldn't potentially even still be in our home.

But, with the costs coming down and efficiency going up on current panels/systems, it may in fact be time to crunch some numbers again. And there's always the "let's give our money to someone other than our local rape and pillage the community energy provider" factor. ;) It would also feel better to be "greener" than we are but if that were such a high priority for us, I think I would first simply remove my tank (this thought has crossed my mind). Then, a small solar system would definitely be cost effective and simply cover the majority, if not all, of our basic non-aquarium electrical energy use.

Ever considered adding sola tubes or something similar? Or are they not doable in your house?

I wish they were in mine....

Nick

I'd considered them long ago but they aren't all that feasible in my house and more importantly, I've not been all that impressed when they are used for lighting a reef tank. I've heard through the grapevine that a local reefkeeper is going to use them on a new tank so I'll be interested in seeing them in actual use and how well they do long term wise.

Ever thought of a light mover like I have?

I have three halides over my 250, if I didn't have the mover I would have 4.

Just a thought.;)

I will link it if you need it.

LittleBlueGT: Light movers are not an option I care to go with. That being based more on personal preference than anything else.

jrenoe1: Word association? Umm... Gandhi. ;)

DML08: I and my tank thank you. ;)

Hey Joesph any more updates on the tank? It looks like you're going to be needing something 36" soon!

IIRC, you also made speakers. I hope you done mind posting some of that work you've done and what the specs are. Thanks!

Definitely still one the best tank's on reefcentral. I've seen a lot of builds and so many of them use too much gear. IMO it complicates things and takes away from the actual tank. More pages are more dedicated to the equipment haha.. silly... anyway peace!

First of all, thanks for the very kind words.

The tank has been cruising along lately. I am just enjoying it with not much to do with it other than the typical, regular maintenance. I did do some fairly severe fragging on a couple of my corals in a need to both make more room and acquire some frags for a swap to benefit our local reef club. his did open the tunnel up a bit which used to be the valley between the two rock structures. ;) I also did a recent water change which was promptly followed by a coral spawning event. Here's a couple shots taken at night with a flashlight and the camera's flash...

Here's a AquaController graph showing the water change depicted at the blue circle and the start of the spawn depicted by the red circle.

It took several hours of skimmer cleaning and filter sock replacements to get the water back from a light milkiness. The skimmer didn't start foaming like normal again for a couple of days. Unfortunately, having just done the water change a day before, I didn't have any water to do a proper water change after the spawning. But, all is well now and the tank and corals seem none-the-weary from this event.

As far as speaker building, I haven't built any for quite a few years now. I just don't have the time to do so even though it's a passion of mine and has been since I was in my early teens. Here's a couple of photos I scrounged up. First is my speakers. These are black lacquer (about 8 coats worth) with ScansSpeak and Vifa drivers and some really top notch crossover components (seen at the right in their separate, outboard housings). The dual subwoofers are 1.5" thick MDF walled boxes with tempered Masonite honeycomb internal bracing and 15" drivers. These are powered by 1000-watt dual amps. ;) The main LR speakers are driven by McIntosh tube amps (seen on the TV stand). The sound is quite phenomenal... if I don't say so myself. ;)

Here's another set I built for my brother-in-law and are also are black lacquer (not quite as many coats though ;) ) which utilize Aerogel drivers and the same wall and internal bracing structure as well as being a ported box design. The subwoofer is a 12" design with the dedicated 250-watt amplifier on its back panel. The grills I custom made of steel rod, bent and welded together prior to being powder coated for longevity. The crossover is seen to the right of the speaker. I was pleasantly surprised how well these sound and how well the subwoofer melds with the main speakers. My brother-in-law seems pleased. ;)

Phenomenal work! I'm slowly getting into better sounding audio but I'm just barely learning about what's on the market. I'm not at the level of knowing what everything is yet, but I know you have some expensive amps there! The good thing with audio is that good stuff never degrades.

I just got some Hivi swan D1090 speakers from theaudioinsider and will test my ears with them.

I'm always impressed with your craftsmanship and skill level. I will have to learn patience one day to be able to build quality items one day myself.

My bad about the sentence structure earlier. Sometimes my thoughts just zoom by and I miss a couple words.
I had meant to say that your reef is growing so rapidly that you may need to upgrade to something even bigger soon.

Keep posting man, your pictures have their own folder on my computer. Peace.
