240g Bottom Plastic Trim and Structural Integrity

I just bought a 240g and the tank came with the bottom black trim removed.

My question is, is the trim necessary for the structural integrity of the tank or can I simply cushion it like you would an acrylic tank with foam insulation.

Also where would I buy a trim for an 8'x2'x2'. Most online shops don't offer this size.

The trim is generally used to hide the joints and protect the joints from impacts. It doesn't contribute significantly to the tanks ability to hold water

That's what I thought would be the case. I'm just trying to find more opinions because the community is pretty split on the topic.
