250 metal Halide lights question

I have just recently placed a set of 2 250 watt metal halide lights over my aquarium and they look amazing. I built a canopy out of wood (cabnet grade plywood)over my tank and mounted the lights directly to that. These lights obviously get very hot and I wanted to know if it was safe to have them mounted that way? and if not what do you suggest?
Thanks

I mounted my 250s away from the wood by building a metal frame and then attaching my reflector and 250s to that. They gte hot enough that I've burnt paper when changine bulbs by placing a hot bubs on it. I wouldn't place them directly in the wood, but then again, I probably do alot of things others wouldn't. Got any fire insurance?
