280G+ Starphire In-Wall Build by ReefArtist

after reading the RDSB thread Carol will you have a 20" dsb? :).. its a very interesting read. I may employ the idea if nitrates become an issue

anemone.jpg

I found your dream anemone Carol

Oh Joe - that is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!! Where did you get it? The colors in that BTA is wonderful. Did you buy the one John had - with the yellow tips? Hey that strainer is a great idea!

Joe, I still can't get over the colors of your anemone - I just love it. If it ever has babies please put me first on your list :D.

huge1day - that's going to be an awesome setup. From what I've read it will lower your nitrates - so you are on the right track. How deep are you going to make it?

Doc_B - Thanks for the advice on the leak. I'm going to take it apart and try to fix it that way but if not that might be an option.

poknsnok - 20" might work :D. I'm thinking around 10-12, as it is I need to purchase more sand - No not another sand buy - LOL!!! I'm using up all my "0" grade so I might have to see if John has any left. BTW I love your new avatar :D, is that pumpkin or rufus.

I am going 10-11 inches. Based on everything I read I think it will help with nitrates. I am going to put black acrylic inside the tank to keep the light out...

Thats not mine carol.. no anemones in my tank.. its a type of bubbletip that Paul Whitby (totm October) got. its called a Flame Anemone.. I attatched the link to the page and the vendor.. However seeing that anemone could change my mind :)

Carol I used the pipe dope thread sealer with tape on my dart. I put plumbers tape on every thread connection. make sure you put it on in hte right direction so when you tioghten your connector it doesn't loosen up.

When I am afraid of certain connectors I always use a little pipe dope.

Everything looks like it is coming along great. Excellent work and planning.

Thanks Eric for techinque and I've used the thread sealer for most but this one I only used tape. What I found was when I put it on I only tightened it until the Venturi was facing upward - it wasn't tight enough. I found in this months ReefKeeping Mag in the product review about the skimmer - "The one issue I had to deal with was aligning the Venturi to face upward, rather than at a slight angle downward (Figure 3), once the elbow was fitted onto the pump. " I guess I wasn't the only one - I'll have to try P. Whitby's solution.
FixedPump.JPG

In this location it doesn't leak, but the hose to the Venturi doesn't reach to air intake. I'll have to play around with it to get it in the up right direction.

BafflesReturns.JPG

I added the baffles for my sump this weekend - now I can't run my pumps at 100%. Not that I could before but now it really gets low!

BafflesBeforePumps.JPG

This is with the pumps backed off about 1/2 the power - I'm still getting a water fall.

SumpWithBaffles.JPG

I wanted to put a few rocks in the middle as a filter and I didn't want any sand getting into the pumps - might have to re-think my design.

That makes perfect sense. Where did you get your glass for your sump?

Mike I live in Palm Bay. Do either of you have hte direct link? I couldn't find them in ebay.

Hey Eric, you can get it at any glass shop. Make sure it's 1/4" thick as the stuff at Lowes/HD is way to thin for this much flow. You can have them cut it and grind the edges for each piece being around $8. If you have the tools you can DIY them:
GrindingPolishingGlassSM.JPG

Here I'm grinding down the glass for a good fit with a wet belt sander. You can cut glass with a tile saw and a REALLY good glass blade - I use the MK Diamond 159326 blade. Make sure it's a WET tile saw - without water it will be in a million pieces within a few seconds. You can use a less expensive blade for this use and get good results. I work with glass so I have all the tools, generally I think most have the glass companies do it for them.

albfelix, thank you and I hope you get a tank up soon :).

Great build!!! I've been following along as mine goes up as well. I really suggest the pods and Phyco as I'm on day 16 from when the rock was added and my tank is full of fish, coral and the anemone. All are doing fantastic! I know I rushed it and don't recommend doing so, but I didn't have a choice but to move out the old tank. I'm enjoying your progress!

Thanks Marcye! I must say your thread is full of information. It's amazing that your tank is ready for livestock. I'm going to start using the pods and Phyco - sounds like it's wonderful for the corals and not just for start ups. Here's a quote from your build thread: Marcye's build thread "adding the phytoplankton and pods is a great way to bring tanks quickly back after using Interceptor as it helps build up all that are lost during the treatment.". BTW - Love the Solaris lighting - very nice, they certainly have come a long way.

thats right I forgot you were into glass and all that. Sweet you must have a bunch of cool tolls you can use.

I must say it again your work is amazing. I look for ward to retiriing one day and playing. No rush ahhahah I got a long way to go..

Eric - I'll never "retire" it's the type "A" personality in me. I thought I could relax and kind of do nothing for awhile - not! I can't so I just go with the flow, I enjoy life to much to be on the side lines :).

Thanks everyone for all the PM's and encouragements, I really appreciate it.

Well I was able to get a couple of DIY rocks done. I fired them in my new kiln so now it's broken in (kind of). It has a new controller with very different features so it will take me some experimental time to get it down. So far it is fantastic!

Here are my new rocks - please let me know what you think. Be a little kind though :D.

ClayRocks.JPG

This is the largest one which is about 24 inches x 12 inches and about 10 inches tall.

ClayRock2.JPG

Another view - This would make a nice hiding place for one of my tangs.

ClayRock3.JPG

This is my second rock and is about half the size of the first. This one would be more for my little guys to hide.

ClayRock4.JPG

Another view - all the little specs are vermiculite which will burn out when it's fired.

This is part one of my rock building - I still have a lot more to make but this is a start.

Note: all of the materials that I'm using are reef safe and people safe - in that you can eat off it once it's been fired.
