280Gal Flow Help

Im setting up a 72"L x 36"W X 25"T Tank. I will have two Dart Pumps for the returns. How should i set up the returns? I was thinking about getting two Ocean Motions 8Ways or some sea swirls. What should i do? Any suggestions?

well if i went the 8ways way i was thinking about having 8 of them coming from the bottom at the front of the tank blowing up on the rocks and the other 8 coming from the top (one in each corner then 4 down the center with the revolutions maybe)

I am building a similar set so Im tagging along.... I am doing 2x closed loops with 4 returns in front and 4 in the back , My main sump return will be 2x 1" sea swirl returns just wondering the pump to use.

I don't think you need 2 Darts for returns. 1 Dart would be plenty of flow through the sump and the other one could serve as a CL pump. Darts are not pressure pumps so use the largest pipe you can. I use all 1 1/2" Sch 26 (thin wall). While Loc-line is handy for it's ability to bend, it sure puts backpressure in the line (meaning lots of head loss).

I prefer 2, 4-way OM's over a single 8-way. Easier to plumb in my opinion. I also prefer Wavyseas to Seaswirls. Wavyseas are programmable for speed and arc while Seaswirls are not.

You could bring water to the tank using 1 Dart with a Y going to 2 WavySeas or Seaswirls that would sweep the tank from the back. Use the other Dart to an OM of your choice. I think I'd use a 4-way with outlets in the front of your tank pointed down and back.

Something like that.......

Im not going to do a CL because im affraid to many critters will get sucked up and im trying to not have many holes in the glass. The two darts on the sump shouldn't be a problem. Im putting a full length external over flow on the tank (72" long) and the sump i built is 70"x30"x22"tall I have a dart now on my 75 gal with a 8 way with 4 on the bottom front blowing on the rocks and 4 on the top back wall with one revolution. it seams to be working ok. I have the dart plugging away at full throttle on that tank. I'm never really sure how much flow is too much. Wouldn't the returns at the bottom blowing up on the rocks be better than blowing down on them from the top? I put them on the bottom of my other tank so it would blow the crap off the rocks and into the overflow. Seams to work fairly well.

Here are some pictures of my 75Gal setup now.

A Dart driven 8 way on a 75!!!!???

That is beautifuly crazy!

Can't wait to see what what you settle on for this tank!

well it was supposed to be for my 200gal. but i decided not to set up a 200gal because i was in the process of looking for a house and i didn't want ot have to move the 200 gal. but now i found a house and want to put a 280gal in the wall. the 75gal is at my parents house still and my mom is taking care of it. She tries her best but its slowly dieing :( Im going as fast as i can to get this 280 set up so i can move all my fish and stuff over. I miss them lol. SO you tihnk 2 8 ways would be too much on the 280? I just notic4ed OM raised there prices! I paid $300 for my 8 way when i bought it.

You can never have to much flow... If you are planning SPS (2) darts on a 280 will not be enough.. And if it's glass and you don't want to drill your options are limited..

I have also opted to not use CL on my new 300. I am running 3 sea swirl returns across the back and 3 tunze 6100 on controller, one of which (the center one) is on a wavy sea with tunze bracket. Later, I will add two waveboxes as the livestock grow in.

I decided not to go with a CL because-

1. Tank was not drilled for one when I got it and it has starphire on the front and I didnt want to risk breakage.

2. Less plumbing (tank viewed from 3 sides)

3. Less electricity
