3 Flames 1 Tank

Hi there.
I like to do things outside the box.
Divers Den can keep their $130 pair of flame hawkfish, after all thats alot of $$$ for 2 $35 fish...

I went a step further and put 3 flame hawks in my 75g reef.
Added 1 big one and 2little ones.
Flamehawks are the opposite of clowns in that the biggest turns male and the others stay female, and in the wild the male has a territory and a harem.

I think I nailed it.
No fighting, he likes both his girls and they like him, and its been months now...
The way my mind works, these fish gonna get their own tank for breeding attempts withiin a couple months.

I know this thread useless without pics, but its hard to get all 3 at once, ill try.
I love flame hawks, my fav reef fish, and I really want to make some cb ones.
It wont be easy, but its worth a shot.

Oh, total cost for my harem, 35$ for one fish, others were gimmis..... Lol @ diversden's pricetag!

I know pics are not easy but you can post a video. Looking forward to seeing all 3.

Best of luck with the trio!

Quickly taken, bad pics from my phone...
FA88, I will definately do a vid soon so you can see them interacting, great idea!

This is the male, he stays up high and watches his girls.
He is not afraid to go punk the 6line or candyhog if either one starts messin with the ladies...
If he cant see one of his girls, he gets agitated, goes to find her, and chases her to "her spot"(where he can see them both from his favorite perch)

These are the females, they usually stick together for the most part.
They get along famously, and are always within site of the male.

I love Flame hawkfish. I think I'm willing to risk my 3 peppermints and give one a try. Will they bother snails and hermits?

Youll get 10 different answers to this.
Theres people that believe strongly in their differing opinions.
In MY experience, I keep 1 cbs, 3 peppermints, and tons of hermits and snails with my 3 flamehawks.
I have always had a flamehawk when ive had a tank, and I love shrimp too, ive never lost anything to a flamehawk.

They are considered shrimp eaters by most people, and ive seen one guy swear up and down his took a perfect bite out of a damsel..... I dont see it.

Let us know how it all works out, I'd also be interested in seeing some video :) Best of luck to you! Great looking flames and zoos :)

I wish you the best of luck! I love my flame hawk. He's my favorite fish. Although, given what you say above, perhaps he's a she! I'd love to pair him (or her) up with another, but I'm a little nervous about doing so. I have no interest in breeding, but I think it would be fun to have two and see them interact. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see how you make out.

Here, I got all 3 in the shot!!
Waiting patiently for breakfast :)
Notice how the male always stays up higher so he can see his girls....
I <3 these fish!

Great picture! What a fun tank!

You must have read it wrong...
If you only have 1, it will be a male.
They are opposite of clownfish, and theees no going back...

I likely didn't give enough information. My flame is new and just a baby (a little over an inch). He/she went in my DT last week after 6 weeks in QT. So, I suspect "he" is female now, but from what you say he will ultimately be male.

FrogFishFeeder,

What a beautiful setup and that trio is soooooooooo cute. Keep up the good work and please continue to update.

Kevin

Thanks for the compliments!
I am on the forum thru my android, and its metropcs, so pics take long enough to upload, let alone a video....
Btw-are my pics like giant on a computer screen? Do I need to go a size down?
