3 tangs in a 120 gallon?

I was thinking of buying 2 yellow tangs and a powder blue tang for my new 120 gallon. If I add these at the same time, could this be successful?

would work well as long as all are added at same time. my biggest fear is that with 2 yellows you could have an issue between the two. I ahve successfully kept 3 tangs in a 75. yellow, naso and ebili mimic. I ahve a purple and a kole in my 75 now. just dont let the tang police find out!

I would say to get another type of tang to replace one of the yellow. Two Yellow tangs together would be trouble unless you have 3. :)

Hmm, perhaps I should just add 1 yellow and 1 powder blue.

IMO that's a good idea:)

Powder blue is one of my favorites if you can get a healthy one. Also think of the space they will need in a few years. I vote 1 yellow and th eblue. 3 tangs would take up all the bio when they get big, and they are pooping machines! Save a little room for a few neat smaller fish. My royal gramma is always front and center and has tons of charecter.

Jeff, I wanted to add a side note to my response. yes, having just 2 yellows will cause havoc sooner than later. as long as the tangs are different body styles and colors, you should not have much issue with them. for instance, the yellows are of the sailfin type while the powder is totally different shaped. also, yellows are notorious for being "junkyard dogs" I had one that would attack everythign entering the tank no matter what it was. he was since traded at the critter for a Purple, which is one of my favs. I have had much better success out of this one. I must have gotten a docile one. it has been at least a year since I got my purple and last month I added a kole. Very different color and body style. we had a few little fights, but after 1 overnight, peace prevailed. you may wish to consider a bit of variety if you want 3 of them. say maybe the yellow, a Naso and the Powder blue.

I so wanted a powder blue, but they dont really ship well and it is hard to get a healthy specimen, or at least I have tried. also the Powder is very succeptable to infection , and can be extremely mean. I did so much research on them and I still would kill for one. your 120 should give it plenty of room to roam about and if you are able to get a good one and place it in with 2 other healthy tangs at the same time, you should be in good shape. just make sure they are some of the last fish added.

and yes, they do produce alot of waste.

A 120 won't support a naso for very long (trust me I know...I now have a 240 because of it).

while yes, the naso can get very big, I have successfully kept one if a 75 for at least 2 years. I had it in with a yellow and when I got rid of the yellow, it seemed to miss it's friend so much it died. crazy....

My point about the naso is this: all too often people get Nasos, saying that they will upgrade later. The problem is that most people don't upgrade to tanks big enough to support a full sized naso. So my feelings on the situation are that...just get the fish that your tank can accomodate NOW, and then once you have the monster tank...THEN get the naso.

My Naso did the same exact thing when his buddies died from tank overheating....We almost lost him because he was lonely and wouldn't eat a thing. Took awhile to coax him back to health. He's very fat and happy now!!! :)

Of course mel if they have a nice big one now and are not going to up grade I would take it off there hands when I get my 2k tank up and if they need it gone right away I could put them in my 240. but I do agree with you get the fish that fit your tank now as we never know what the future holds and it is hard to sell a fish that you have had for a year .
