I am looking into this upgrade kit for my lights:
Light Upgrade

With this upgrade, what additional corals will I be able to carry in my tank? Outside of polyps, etc...

Is it worth the money? I would like a mod that could retain the stock lid...

Outside of softies, you could grow some lps like all the euplillias and the types of brains along with pretty much all lps. Stay away from sps and clams though. Your lights aren't strong enough for them.

Go with the 70 or 150 watt HQI bulbs if you want to keep clams and sps. PC can keep some sps alive but you will never get the color you get from a Metal halide bulb. hth

I have the same hood but for my nanocube.

I tried a monticap and it look like crap. SPS can live but they won't thrive under this lighting. No way would I put a clam under this lighting.

The only coral i can keep now that I couldn't before is gorgonians and those still need to be feed weekly with phyto.

Overall I like the hood, it's a good alternative if you just don't want to deal with MH.

Wow, $159.00?!? I did the same thing, 3x40W. I used a $12.00 advance 1x40W ballast, flattened out the reflector, added a fan ($6.00 from radio shack) and screwed 2x bulb clips ($1.00) in DIY'd some bulb connectors (butt splices with the insulation trimmed off) and was off to the races.

The bulbs needed to be changed anyway so I upgraded to 40's (The Ballasts will take them with no problems). Don't spend the $$ , DIY.

I agree about the no Clams and SPS, works well with blastos, other LPS and Zoo's.
