300 and 360 system..need foam?

My dad is setting up a 300 and 360 system, they will have a common sump. He has asked me to post this question:

When setting the tanks on his custom (homemade) stands, is there a need to put some type of foam down first?

If so, what kind of foam, and where do you get it from?

What is the purpose of the foam?

I've always put down a sheet of 1/2" exterior, high density foam board. You can pick it up at any home improvement center. I feel it helps compensate of any minor flaw the stand or surface the tank might be sittng on.
