I have about 400 total gallons in the same size room. I'm using a $250 dehumidifier. It has been running for about a month and works great. I'm not sure what it does to the electric bill though.
I'm looking for options on my future tank. In AZ it is cool in the winter so I would like the option of pulling in air from the outside but the summer is too hot.
I'm thinking about dedicated ac (fujitsu mini splits or other) for the summer and then some type of air exchange in the winter.
Ventilation is a huge concern and for me it's not real clear what the best options are.
I used to run a dehumidifier and that gets EXPENSIVE especially when most of them run at 6A and up. I have heard others use the Panasonic whisper quiets with good success. I don't know if those have the totally sealed motor or use coated components so that the salt doesn't kill them. I'm actually looking for a good exhaust fan/venting system to install in my fishroom im building in the basement. I have a trane SB1.4 AC on the house as well as a Lifebreathe HRV. I want to make sure that humidity doesn't kill my house. Main tank is in kitchen-ish area at 220g and fishroom will probably house another 200g.
I agree with you Rob, the house is the BIG investment, and must be protected!
All of these options are confusing, and I think what would really help is knowing what solutions are tried-and-true in the brutal salt water environment.
It give you an idea that location is important as well as time of year, ex summer months.
Probably the most important part of it:
How much humidity should I have in my home?
The short answer is 35%; however, the ideal range by most research is between 40% and 60%, if the home is properly constructed to handle humidity that high. That is why the compromise level agreed to by ARI Standards is 35%.
So, I would imagine a humidity monitor of some sort for the inside of the home may be a smart investment.
