I have a 300 gallon tank on order, 96" long 30" wide and 24" deep. This will be a mixed reef.

I have a list of fish I would like to add and looking for advice and input as to if these feel appropriate, what fish you would remove or add to this list and why. Also, what order would you add the fish and why? Fish additions will be added over the course of the next year, going slow. I will also put all fish through TTM and quarantine before adding to the main tank.

Blue Green Chromis
Percula Clowns x2
Midas Blenny
Royal Gramma
Red Mandarin x2

Lyretail Anthias x5-7

Blue Throat Trigger

Tangs
Yellow Tang
Blonde Naso Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Kole Eye Tang
Sailfin tang
Achillies Tang

Wrasses
Exquisite Fairy Wrasse
Red head Salon Fairy Wrasse
McCoskers Flasher Wrasse
Pink Margin Fairy Wrasse
Line Spot Flasher Wrasse
Ruby head Fairy Wrasse

Thanks

Good to know, anyone have success with both long term? Or is it hit in miss depending on the individual tang?

Skip the chromis, they will pick each other off until there is just one.

In general, you do not want to mix tang genera but it can be done in a big tank sometimes.
The yellow and sailfin tangs should be QT'd together to determine if they will be aggressive. Ditto the Achilles and PBT. Hard to catch a tang in a big tank. ( I know ).

I happen to love my Lyretails as well. Be sure to get all females. Watching one become male is fascinating. Just had that occur a couple of weeks ago.

I agree, you might can also try to get a small Yellow Tang and add a bigger Sailfin later. Also whichever one you decide on, the PBT or AT, make sure they are added last. Also, if you want the Sailfin, take a look at the Yellow Mimic Tang to replace the yellow tang.

Would love to hear more on this. This tank size is a long term goal of mine. I would be looking more into 2 large angels and several different butterflies, and maybe 2-3 different tangs though.

Update

Update

Ok just an update as I have decided on a couple different fish.

I currently have the following....

Percula Clowns x2
Midas Blenny
Royal Gramma
Pajama Cardinal
McCoskers Flasher Wrasse

I would Like to add the below and in the following order, does this seem fine to give best chance of success? Too many fish? Should all of the Tangs be added last?

Glass Cardinalfish/Longspine x9-11

Wrasses
Exquisite Fairy Wrasse
Red head Salon Fairy Wrasse
Pink Margin Fairy Wrasse
Line Spot Flasher Wrasse
Ruby head Fairy Wrasse

Blue Throat Trigger

Red Mandarin x2

Lyretail Anthias x5-7

Tangs
Blonde Naso Tang
Kole Eye Tang
Yellow Tang and Sailfin QT together
Achillies Tang and Powder Blue QT together

If you can get the tangs all at once (as as juveniles), that's your best bet to keeping aggression to a minimum.

Also be careful with the wrasses. The Ruby Head gets big and aggressive toward other wrasses. I have one and after nearly 3 years it will still chase the solar wrasse here and there. The ruby was the first wrasse added. I would also suggest adding the wrasses all at one time for the same reason as above. As much as I would love to add another wrasse to my tank, I just don't think it would work unless I used an acclimation box for an extended period of time. Even then, the Ruby would probably chase it quite a bit. If you don't add them all at once, add that one last. It's beautiful though so I definitely agree with your choice to have it on the list.

Thanks...Sounds like add species as smaller individuals and at once when possible with Tangs being last.

What size tank are you planning to quarantine those Tangs in? I would be very careful. PB and AT are ich prone and any little stress will probably cause a break out. I would take my chances of adding a smaller PB and a bigger AT later using a acclimation box and even possible the mirror trick.

I was planning on it TTM in 20 Gallon longs. Is that not enough tank for two small (juvenile) tangs?

I have done TTM with regular 20 gallon tanks. The amount of space isn't that big a deal. I would say a 20 long is big enough, especially if they are 3" or so.

Would 40B be a better option, I guess I assumed (Maybe incorrectly) that a 20long would be sufficient. Is volume more important than tank length?

I would have a harem of Royal Gramma. If you have one male, the rest will stay females, they will be fine together.
I would rec not that many tangs in a 300 gal, nor big tangs like Naso and Sailfin. I had 450 gal and currently have 320 gal tank.

I tend to agree with Orion here - I would either end up with 4 tangs or target some smaller ones. I think of the ones you have listed I would keep the Naso, Kole, Yellow, and Achilles. That is the order I would add them to the aquarium as well.
