300 Gallon Upgrade!

Moving up from 125 gal to 300 gal. Previous system was my first and was taken over by aiptasia. Needless to say I will be starting from scratch aside from my current fish and few corals that will be quarantined.

Current fish:

1 Hippo Tang
1 Yellow Tang
1 Royal Gramma
2 Percula Clownfish
3 Pajama Cardinalfish
3 Blue-green Chromis
1 Sand Sifting Starfish
2 Peppermint Shrimp
1 Cleaner Shrimp

Think I'm gonna go with a mixed reef, a lot of SPS, for this system. Obviously I have a lot of room for more fish. On the fence right now in terms of smaller schools of fish, smaller variety, sprinkling in few more med-large fish (tangs), etc. The wife really wants an eel, but I keep telling her it is a predator and will eat whatever it can fit in his mouth.

Guess I'm looking to people on here who have experience with this type of system to throw in their own advice. Thanks for reading!

A friend has a 500 gallon system with mixed LPS and SPS and a variety of sizes of fish. His snowflake moray was the wimpiest member of the bunch, not the most aggressive. The sailfin tang used to beat it back into the rockwork regularly, making it difficult to ensure the eel got enough to eat.

What 300 are you going with?

Nice choice of tank

Thanks. It was manufactured in February 2011. I bought it locally from a fellow reefer. He custom built a very nice stand and canopy for it. Very excited about doing the plumbing and getting it up and running!

450 pounds dry. We had to take mine around the back of my house and remove the patio doors, about 100 feet total. I wonder if Daves friends experience with the eel is normal or the exception to the rule. If I had to guess I'd say the latter.

I'd recommend taking a dremel to the overflow teeth and widening them so the braces don't touch. There are inserts that come out, so it's really easy.

Thanks for the tip. The sump and filtration the guy I bought it from was well thought out. He has two external pumps, one is kept as a backup in case of pump failure. He also has a chamber that acts as a water reservoir. He could drain one section and pump the premixed water in without ever shutting down the system. Pretty nice setup!

call friends over for the hockey game and surprise them with the tank move, worked here!!!, im setting up a 300 gal, 96x30x24, 1/2" glass, 430# dry, I feel your pain
