300G Complete Setup FS

Ahhh I see that makes sense I tried one many years ago and had that problem, I had forgot they we're finicky eaters.
Since this thread is done I assume? I'll derail it a little further ;)

Did you get all your plumbing done yet Caleb?

Sorry guys, I've been so busy the last 4 days working all day and half the night on my basement, trying to get it finished... Don told me he ended up taking everything down to Mr Aqua's since someone broke his 150HQI pendant without telling him. He felt why should he offer his equipment, fish and corals at 50% off to people who would break his equipment without fessing up to it. I for one am really embarassed at the chain of events, but what's done is done. He left for L.A. yesterday and everything was taken down to Mr Aqua on consignment. Sorry to a lot of innocent by-standers, it always seem that one person can really mess things up for everyone else.

To Chris
No we have not got all the plumbing done yet I have been moveing all week and we just have not got to gether im hopping we can next week-end

How could his pendant break. Aren't pendants usually hanging?

As for my plumbing, I've gotten everything done that I can except the sump plumbing, because I'm not sure if I'm going to mod a tank from scott, or have Eric build me one. And then I've got to order a 2" bulkhead for the far left side, and the loc-line. So I'm getting pretty close. I forgot what I should do screwing in the pipes to the hammerhead pumps. Should I put pipe dope, and then teflon tape on? Or one or the other?

Yeah pipe dope is all I ever use. I think some reefers that aren't good at plumbing came up with the pipe dope over tape method, thats a reefer thing not a plumbing thing ;)
Get good pipe dope though, I use blue magic from the plumbing supply stores, it is thick not the stuff from home depot. It makes a difference IMO.
I forgot you were changing sumps so I see why you have stopped, I'd love to see a photo of what you have done so far though!

I've had problems using thread tape even the thick pink stuff on larger threads like the ones on Dart's and Hammers. Had good luck with the pipe dope though after I ditched the thread tape.

One thing I noticed on my CLM build was that the PVC fittings bottom out on the DARTs. I had to cut the PVC fitting about 1/4" down so that it would thread all the way down into the pump.

There is a simple way to use teflon tape effectively. First it only goes on one way, if you are screwing in the fiting and the tape is comeing off, you went the wrong way. Second don't be afraid of, pile it on, it should be tapered, thiner at the start of the threads and much thiker at the top of thread. That way as you screw it in the tape is getting thicker and thicker wedging the fitting in place. Then on equeipment that does not come with a taper, you don't bottom out the fitting.

F the tape, pipe dope is easy to use and seals it the best.
Watch a plumber sometime, does he use tape or dope? most of the time dope especially underground where you don't want a leak and have to dig it all back up.
If the pump manufactures' recommend it there is a reason right?
