3130 and 3130/2 differences

What are the differences between the two?

Are there any obvious ways to identify which is which?

could I tell from a picture?

The difference is not so obvious. A 3130 has the older pump 3130.02 which used the 3000.50 drive unit. A 3130.04 is the pump in the 3130/2. Later 3130/2's also had and improved venturi which you could retrofit on either skimmer, the body also changed slightly having the silencer glued in, older ones were removable and the older design tended to let water seep into the venturi over time reducing performance and they needed to be replaced periodically.

Am I correct about this?

In 2000 the production of 3130 stopped and 3130/2 began.

The unit I'm interested in was listed as "practically new," but I don't know if the seller originally bought it after it had been sitting on an storage shelf for years.

Either way I'm gonna get it because I need an in display skimmer, and the price is right on this one. When I do get it, I'd like to check the manufacture date. I can check this from a number on the pump right?

Thank you for your help.

Yes, September of 2000 was the end of the 3130. It could be he just thought the /2 was inconsequential. The date is on the pump but it is in a code of series/qrtr/year

I guess the pic below confirms that it's a 3130.

You mentioned that the silencer needs periodic replacement. How could I go about getting that? I figure it would be smart to have one around in case these part become unavailable. Also how could I get the improved venturi?

Could I glue the silencer myself?

I tried looking up these part numbers on the tunze parts illustrations on tunze.com, but the illustrations of 3115/3130/3140/3160 come up with nothing but a generic picture.

Thanks for helping me

That is an original 3130 alright. Long time since I have seen that, judging by the manual I would say it is from about 96-99. The parts are still available and could easily be built out of parts we still use on other products. You may need a new silencer in a year or two and they are not fast sellers and as I said, I could make one if I had too. The drive unit of the pump has been improved even though it is now obsolete, if anything I would have that as a spare, part 3000.50. This part is now made with graphite reinforced plastic and much stronger. The venturi is part 3130.16 and you should be able to order both on Tunze.com.
