340 Gallon in-wall build

Okay we had several hurdles delay our progress including a major leak in our basement unrelated to the tank. I will post an update with pics very soon!

Between camping, kids and work we've finally made significant progress!

Returns are plumbed: Herbie overlfow, 2" pipe with gate valve and durso pipe to sump

Stand has been coated with water proofing material and then painted. I placed a piece of insulation under the sump to help reduce noise/vibrations.

Sump design and build is complete (thanks for the feedback gang!). I re purposed a display tank. Right side will have a sock filter where the overflow was. I need to buy a smaller filter or modify the sock filter I have. We cut out the bottom half of the overflow box and will have the drain dump into this opening.

Drain will go to the sock filter in right compartment. Skimmer will run here.
Over the bubble traps and into the return. We mad the left compartment the fuge. I purchased a Pan World 250ps pump for the return and will run a line to provide flow to the fuge.

Skimmer is MRC II

Return will be 1" in wall over the top through two 3/4" pipes.
I'm adding a Jabao WP-60 wavemaker for flow

Crossing my fingers that I haven't made any grave mistakes as of yet!! Feedback is welcome. Thanks for your help and interest in this build.

Jabao WP-60 should give me 2600-5300 gph depending on settings I choose for flow variable.

This in addition to the return flow of 1900 gph I'm hoping will be enough. Anyone have experience with this wavemaker?

I don't see how you intend to get in behind the tank in your triangular closet space. Cutting out a few large cardboard boxes and taping them together into the size and shape of your tank and stand will help you visualize what the tank will really look like in the space. From there you can think about what you will need to work on the actual tank once it is in place.

The photos don't show the space behind the tank well at all. My husband and I can both fit into the access area behind the tank. It's a nook, not a room per say but It is adequate for two people to enter and work. Thankfully all of the equipment fits under the tank and just next door under the stairs.

If it was 2' smaller on both sides it would have been a no-go.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on aquarium automation through a control center device. I've always used timers to assist in on/off schedules but this round I'm looking to automate as much as I can.

I know products exist (Reefkeeper Elite/Apex/ReefLink/Neptune) but I don't really understand what ways they will be helpful.

It would be nice to have an app where I can monitor certain parameters.

I have two in my 360 gallon currently and my flow is pretty insane. I also have a few WP-40s installed as well. You will probably want to add another powerhead at some point to help avoid dead spots, but I think 1 WP-60 will be enough until the tank starts getting packed with corals.

You can monitor remotely with the Apex. I'm not sure about the other devices.

I do not have my Apex set up yet, but there are positives and negatives with controllers. It's great because you run everything through one piece of equipment, but if that equipment fails you can lose your whole tank.

We finally have water running!!

Final pics of setup before we opened valves & turned on the pumps.

Water has been running for about 3 hours. We have leaky connections on all four drains (what!?) but will be fixed quickly we hope by tightening the white pvc adapters that are threaded to the inside of the bulkheads.

Here are the leaky connections. We used tape but it's leaking anyway.

Skimmer has been running about 3 hours and I'm really happy with it so far!

Now to go work on my dripping pipes UGH!!

My MRC II skimmer is submerged which is fine up to 6" according to MRC but the gate valve is also submerged which I didn't think about prior.

Anyone know if this is safe or if there will be problems with this being under water?
