This is my 3rd potters angel that has died for me.... many people say they are easy to keep, I have yet to keep one successfully. I know it is not my tank.... acro dominated, so water perameters are pristine, I have kept Flagfin angels, Powder blue tangs, etc. all supposedly much more difficult to keep but this angel eludes me..... why can I not keep one??? I have a cherub angel in there presently, with no other fish picking at the new arrival..... just cannot get them to eat!!! Any suggestions???

can you explain in more details the introduction methods you have used once the fish has been aquired? where they ordered online or from LFS? did they eat at the LFS and how long were they kept there?

from what i know, lots of ppl say to avoid using a qt tank as the fish needs to go straight into an environment where it can graze on live rock, avoid putting it into a tank with other intimidating fish, the cherub is the only other fish in the tank you say? make sure it has heaps of areas to hide in, stick some nori or mussels in amongst the rocks for it to find, and maybe try introducing it with the lights in the tank off and just subtle light in the room just before lights out that night.

i dunno mate, i think they are quite a tricky fish to be honest, and getting them to feed is proberly the hardest task.

good luck if you try again and maybe someone else will have some btter ideas for ya.

potters are not easy to keep quite the contrary. They are known as one of the angels that are nearly impossible. The problem comes in getting them to eat as you have seen firsthand.

if you must try another phishey business has some that are eating. I have bought from him before and highly suggest his fish.

I dont think I've ever heard someone say potters are easy.

IMO, theyre the absolute toughest.

The Potter's are a hardy fish . . . once they've been acclimated to the tank. Thing is, it can sometimes be hard to get them to eat and then they ultimately succumb.

If you ordered the fish online, maybe next time try a LFS and see over a couple week period if it eats.

i guess I must have really lucked out . . . about 14 months ago I found a Potters at a LFS and he's been doing absolutely fantastic since then. Has survived extreme salinity swings (RO flooded tank), high alkalinity (over 25dKh), heat problems (91F) . . . tough lil guy!

get the smallest one possible (3" and under) and it should come around. Ive gotten many to eat with patience and trying tons of different foods. Most like live clams or scallops :)

The last fish I acclimated with the lights off, I fed 3x daily all different types of foods...... I had the pet store feed him before I aquired him and watched him eat a little mysid shrimp first hand.... I will keep trying but man it is really getting frustrating. I hate to see any livestock die. I think I will try your suggestion of Phishy buisiness but the shortcut provided does not work!!! Oh I got the others from local fish stores that have had them for 2 wks +......

As they like to browse on debris on liverock a near sterile SPS tank would not seem a great enviroment for success to me.
Good point - I believe the stomach contents of these fish reveal a diet primarily of filamentous algae and detritus - items seriously lacking in your average SPS tank.
