4 year old reef, algaefix and tangs....

Tank is a 125 reef with mostly softies and a few LPS. Started noticing some cyno on the substrate and knowing since surgery my cleaning has not been up to par I did a thorough cleaning and large water change. Heard good things about using Algefix so I gave it a try. WOW! What I thought was coralline in some areas was just plain red/brown algaecovering the rocks. On my second treatment with Algaefix and it is really cleaning my rocks! The algae is just rolling off the live rock and I can now see the pink and purple coralline that has been hiding. Rocks are starting to new again very clean.

Question is I have 2 tangs am I going to run into problems with grazing with the rocks being so clean?

I am going to continue to run Algaefix every 3 days until they look spotless again just wondering if the tangs will need more nori than normal if the grazing algae goes away?

tangs love nori, and its very very good for them all... i would feed it regularly regardless... so i would up the nori feeding now especially :) GL

I'd have to agree with upping the Nori. My tangs wipe out a 6"x6" strip within a minute daily, and can probably eat 10X that if I feed it.

On the subject of liquefying the algae with algaeix, what happens to the nitrates and phospjhates and whatever else was bound to that algae that has melted away? Would'nt those substances just go into the water column and cause trouble?

Hopefully you are sucking the algae manually as it dies. If not you might be in for some trouble. It won't all get skimmed out. Not even close.
