So i had a 20l

Cracked it drilling a return so i went 29 gal black sand

I didnt like the dimensions, so i wanna do a 40b (gotta love petco)

The stand build begins

Covered it with this crappy 1/2 ply, i hated it so upgraded to birch

Some more pics of the stand later, still building

I need suggestion on what to paint the inside (white and waterproof)

and outside ( i wanna stain it black, with a varnish)

Also im mounting the doors flush, does anyone have a recommendation for nice hinges that accomplish this?

I have a really stupid "woodworking" question - how did you attach the legs to the bottom? I would think from the bottom, but then how are sure the nails/screws are going where they should? Do you glue first?

Love the 40b! I really wanted to get one during the sale, but I figured my husband would kill me if I brought another tank into the house!

im using drylock on the inside of my stand its a water blocker so it works great if you need to make something waterproof.

good call on the drylok, i toe screwed the legs (1x3 poplar) to the base and top frame.

Huh...I didn't know you could use Drylok on wood. I used that product on our basement block foundation. It has the consistency of pancake batter.

id use kilz.. find it in the paint isle

I just checked on Drylok on wood and it says it's only to be used on masonry..just an fyi.i

The door on the right isn't hung yet, so don't mind the gap. Next i need to sand and stain this weekend, I'm happy with the results thus far.

Sump up and running

I need to upgrade the skimmer next, tidy the wires under the sump, build a screen top (no more jumping clown fish) and finally pikc up a reef keeper, but over all I am much happier with this new setup than previous tanks.

Nice build! The tank looks awesome! what size overflow do you have on it? Is it the same one you had on your other tank?

thanks guys, i love having this open space, im using glass holes 700 gph kit with 3/4 return on a mag 5 at full blast. The sump is turning over twice as fast, which is good for keeping it clean. Def much happier with this 40b than the previous setups

I agree with using kilz inside the stand. That's what I plan on doing. I'm also going to line the bottom with the same membrane material used in ceramic tile showers that I can fold up and adhere to the stand to create a containment if something should overflow.
