40 Breeder Build

Thanks for the update - I like the tank long C2C.

It looks like you removed the sand bed - any reason why? Also, a year later - any changes to your system if you were starting over?

Your candy cane and frogspawn frags sure have taken off - amazing they just started off as a few small heads. Well done!

Nice tank! Thanks for updating a year later.

Thank you very much.

Thank you as well.

I removed the sand bed for the move and never put it back. I am kind of happy with the bare bottom but I wish I had a cutting board or something else in there on the bottom like some others with BB like to do.

If I were starting over I would not put any playthoas in my tank. Not only have they been invasive they have made me physically sick by contact on more than one occasion. I would also keep better track of parameters and I could only imagine the growth I would have seen if my tank didn't go through so many ups and downs.

I have seen significant growth from those two corals but the Frogspawn that is higher up was actually a colony of 15+ heads I got from a reefer that needed to restart his tank, it was $10.

Looks good. I just finished cycling my 40B a few weeks ago. I did a C2C with the BeanAnimal also. I cut my C2C about 3" short on one side and ran my return thru there. I got a small square of glass to cap off the end of the overflow. Works perfectly and technically, didn't lose any weir length because of the 90 degree corner on the overflow. If I remember right, my Overflow is about 3-1/2" x 3-1/2". I drilled the holes for the bulkheads, installed them and used spigot elbows (very little of the elbow actually sticks out in the overflow area) in order to determine the size of the overflow. My elbows are only about 1/32" off the bottom of the overflow glass. I then cut a bunch of slots in the drain elbows (like teeth on some overflows) to create a strainer sorta effect. You can make a deeper overflow, but you'll have to put PVC into the elbow to reach the bottom or have a strainer of some sort attached to it. I've had snails crawling on mine with no issues so far. Oh...I used 1" bulkheads and 1-1/4" plumbing on everything else. Exactly like Bean did originally. Probably a bit larger than I needed, but it works.

My tank has been through a lot of ups and downs over the last few months. Lost all of my SPS except for some montipora which is growing back from nowhere.

I have begun vinegar dosing and have brought the nitrates down considerably. They are less than 10 now. Skimmer is quite productive after a couple of weeks.

Most of my LPS made it except for a large colony of some type of chalice. I have added some SPS from a local reefer as well.

Here is a full tank shot with more of the white channel on.

Keeping it stable for now and building the tank back up. It's a shame that I lost so much but the tank had to take a back seat for a little while.

My apologise for bringing up this old thread (saw a reference to it in another thread).

What is the purpose of the parts on the outside that extend above the tank?

Fantastic build congrats on everything it looks great! Since its been up and running for a while now, anything you would change in regards to the overflow or anything? I'm about to start my 40b beananimal C2C overflow, very excited.

Looks great! Sold my 60 cube two months ago due to a move and housing my fish in a DIY 20g tall. Please OK building a 40 breeder next. I like the overflow!
