40 breeder

Hey everyone, just looking for some ideas for rockwork in 40 breeder...any suggestions or pictures you have feel free to post. Thanks.

It's also a good tank size because of it's width compared to other comparable length and volume tanks. You can do just about anything in that tank.

You can do small islands of rock because you have the width for the fish to get around it completely. You can do large rock walls because you have the width to still keep a lot of swim space in front of it. Or you can do just about anything you can think of. Any rock scape can be done in any tank, it's just a matter of proportion of rock you use. Just google stuff like rockscape and saltwater aquarium and start seeing what you like. If you have any question on how to achieve a similar layout then post the picture on the forums and ask. I'm sure someone will chime in.

I'm just about to rockscape a new tank for my self too and have been doing a lot of looking around. I was set on a way I thought I would go and then found others I liked too. So who knows. In a couple weeks I will go see what my LFS has in stock and really figure out what my tank will look like.

Not much to look at but I like my scape pretty well. Lots of options for coral placement. I like the dual island look too...

Main thing you want to keep in mind is to keep the rock work open, allowing for copious amounts of water movement throughout the rock structure itself. More flow, less detritus, algaes, and healthier corals.
The new thing seems to be the minimalistic aqua scape.

If I had a 40b it would have islands & minimalist setup. I hate my rock wall in my 29g. Maybe bb or a thin layer of crushed coral or large sand to cover the bottom, but I want lots of flow so it can't blow around, never do fine sand again, ever. SPS with my 4x24 Sunpower with 2 reefbrite strip..

I really appreciate the posts guys both of your tanks Are sweet. I do like the idea of a minimalistic aqua scape. I feel like the wall scape everyone has and i wanted to do something a little different. Im liking the idea of separate open islands.

cant really see it they are cell phone pics! but heres my 40 breeder.

What about some ideas for fish. I like anthias as i had them in my larger tank and want them again just not sure if a 40b is big enough.

I would stay away from anthias in a 40. IMO you need a 75 or so but im sure its up for debate just like everything else. If it were me i would stick with clowns, gobies, wrasse fire fish/ dart fish, or blennies.

Anthias is absolutely fine for 40. I have one and it doesn't even swim much.

I like yashas paired with a pistol shrimp. I'm also a huge fan of the Tanaka's pygmy wrasse. Can't go wrong with a banggai cardinal. A couple of percula or ocellaris clowns is never a bad idea either.

And probably my favorite fish in my tank is a yellowtail damsel, but these can be hit or miss. Sometimes they're very aggressive, mine is completely passive and doesn't bother a thing. They are a gamble.

You also have a hippo tang in a 40 which is CRAZY, so im not trying to be nasty, but i really wouldnt take advice from someone with a tang that requires 200 gallons in a 40 breeder? and to answer the real question it all depends on what anthias you but i should have been more clear Blotched Anthias no you need a way bigger tank but Ventralis Anthias would be fine. So i guess it does depend on what Anthias you are talking about!

That tank is sweet and i agree that a 40 is small for tangs but when they are 2in or smaller i doubt its much of a problem. You can just give them away as they grow bigger. I definitley want a school of chromis. I saw red chromis at the lfs but heard they lose their color over time. So think ill go for blue green chromis.

There are some great threads on here that explained why this is an issue, Not only is it very stressful on the fish but also stunts their growth and causes many problems in the long run. A good rule to go by is dont get a fish that will ever out grow your tank. Not really fair to the fish.
