40 Gallon Brreder

Got a 40 gallon breeder at Petsmart today. My first step to get another reef tank up and running. My initial thought is to use my Remora HOB skimmer with no sump. Thinking more about it, I'm thinking maybe go with a sump. Haven't committed yet. I was looking at the Synergy overflow and thought it sounded good. Any thoughts? I think I could drill the tank myself. Didn't sound that difficult.

Those synergy overflows are wonderful. Saw a demo and it's on my list for the new reef. Clean looking.

I'm currently running a 40b too.. no sump.. no skimmer now.. (have a HOB eshopps that I took off last week)...
Mixed reef Softies/LPS/SPS and one leopard wrasse/urchin/ss starfish..
Probably 50lbs of live rock and a 1+ inch sand bed..
ATI 6 x 24W dimmable T5 fixture..
Reef angel controller
2 x Jebao PP8 (way too much for the sand I have so they are running on low)

I'm really enjoying it but will upgrade a bit in a few months when we move into our new house..

Have a fun.. Its a cool tank size

Maybe a bit of a hi-jack. But might prove useful to op. Mcgyvr what powerheads would you recommended if your pp8's are to big.

I have a lot of old stuff from my 65 gallon I used to have. Will probably use my old aquatic life 36" t5 until I eventually get LEDS. Was told I should hang it because might be too much light for the depth of 40 breeder. I also have ecotech MP40 which I was told would definitely be too much flow. I'm just trying to figure everything out again. Just going to take it slow this time. I was in a big rush with my last tank.

I just built my first tank and used the synergy shadow. I watch so many videos about tank builds and was nervous about the sound of the tank, so I chose the shadow because people said it was silent. My plumbing tests confirm it's quiet. I had to raise the water level in the overflow box to reduce the water drop from DT to the overflow height. Also the glass drilling was easy. I used their template and a cordless drill freehand, and taped a hose for water cooling.

I'm really glad I went with the shadow.

I think 2 PP4's would be perfect and allow you to run them at the 100% power modes..
There is no way I can run any of the wave modes on the PP8's or anything but low speed.. but I do have some finer sand..

Is the hole in left for return?

Yes, the left hole is for a 3/4" schedule 80 bulkhead. I went with the Varios-2 return pump, which is very quiet.
The drains all reduce from the 1.5" to 1" right at the Shadow outlet. The only place this thing makes noise is right past the gate valve. It's choked down so much and traps some air in the section of pipe. It takes a few hours to completely go silent.
