Hey y'all,

Im going to start stocking my 40 gallon sps reef with fish and i need ideas for fish which arent too expensive (no more than 50 bucks) and are very good conversation starters. Oddballs, rare fish and colors galore would be nice

Thanks for you ideas. Remember, the more dangerous and big it is, the better!

As long as you are not planning on keeping shrimp, a longnose or flame hawkfish would be excellent. My longnose is one of the more popular fish with guests.

A larger tank would make it easier to come up with "rare" or "exotic" but if you are not going to put any shrimp in your tank I would look into getting

matted filefish or mimic filefish
valentini puffer

these guys get to 4" so I wouldn't plan on putting tons of fish in the tank so they have room to swim

I find this approach a bit troubling. I keep fish I like and really don't care if they are rare or odd or interesting to others.
In general, to most people most of the fish we keep are unfamiliar, maybe with the exception of clownfish who nevertheless are good conversation starters.
Also, many small fish are rather interesting due to their behavior than their color.
A 40g tank will limit the selection to smaller species.
