Is one 400W 10K HM to much light for a 46g bowfront. light is 10" off the water? what kind or corals could i keep that would do good in that type of light and what will not? Thanks
I think it can be used, but it is going to create some problems.
1.You will have to add fans to keep the tank cool if you run much of a photoperiod on the tank. That adds noise and evaporation which is #2
2.You will have a lot of evaporation even if you find a way to get by without fans. You will want an auto top off to keep the salt level as stable as possible, and not have to haul water daily.
3. IME you will have to acclimate almost any corals slowly. Start them on the sand bed,and slowly move them up. It takes patience.
4. You really are using more electricity than needed. I think anything could also be kept in that tank under 250w MH, and a decent reflector. If water quality is high enough.
If your willing to deal with, or have a way around them then go for it. I would sell it on RC and get 250, but you can make it work with a little effort and like anything else in reefing a lot of patience.
I got to thinking after I posted...Always a bad thing
You are going to have heat issues with 250w and probably 175w MH on that tank that will probably require fans at least part of the year, so I guess a few points above really don't count much if you want to stick with MH.
I've found an open top with pendants require little air movement to keep a tank cool under MH's.
Thanks for the info. What about fish will that much light hurt them in any way? The resison I want to use this lighting is that I only have about 50.00 in the hole setup. The light will be in a canopy with a fan. Is anyone out there running this setup?
